What does the Bible say about blood transfusions?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS?

by Shawn Brasseaux

The Russellites—the cult/denomination more commonly known as “The Jehovah’s Witnesses”—are the world-famous champions of the idea that blood transfusions should be rejected under all circumstances. They contend that the Bible is against such a medical treatment. In fact, they do cite some key Bible verses (we will examine those shortly). Firstly, from a medical standpoint, what exactly is a “blood transfusion?” Secondly, what specific arguments do the Jehovah’s Witnesses raise against it? Thirdly, what does the Bible say about it? Finally, what should we as Bible believers conclude about the whole matter? To the Scriptures, friends, to the Scriptures!

MEDICAL BACKGROUND ON THE SUBJECT

According to the Mayo Clinic (MayoClinic.org), blood consists of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body, and carry carbon dioxide away from tissues to the lungs to be exhaled. White blood cells, part of our immune system, fight off infection. Platelets form clots in the holes of blood vessels.

The Mayo Clinic’s website tells us what blood transfusions entail:

“A blood transfusion is a routine medical procedure that can be lifesaving. During a blood transfusion, donated blood is added to your own blood. A blood transfusion may also be done to supplement various components of your blood with donated blood products. In some cases, a blood transfusion is done with blood that you’ve donated ahead of time before you undergo elective surgery. During a typical blood transfusion, certain parts of blood are delivered through an intravenous (IV) line that’s placed in one of the veins in your arm. A blood transfusion usually takes one to four hours, though in an emergency it can be done much faster. A blood transfusion boosts blood levels that are low, either because your body isn’t making enough or you’ve lost blood owing to surgery, injury or disease.”

WebMD medical doctor, Matthew Hoffman, M.D., writes the following on WebMD.com about blood (just some interesting information I thought I would share here while we are on the topic):

“Blood is a constantly circulating fluid providing the body with nutrition, oxygen, and waste removal. Blood is mostly liquid, with numerous cells and proteins suspended in it, making blood ‘thicker’ than pure water. The average person has about 5 liters (more than a gallon) of blood.

“A liquid called plasma makes up about half of the content of blood. Plasma contains proteins that help blood to clot, transport substances through the blood, and perform other functions. Blood plasma also contains glucose and other dissolved nutrients.

“About half of blood volume is composed of blood cells:

  • Red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the tissues
  • White blood cells, which fight infections
  • Platelets, smaller cells that help blood to clot

“Blood is conducted through blood vessels (arteries and veins). Blood is prevented from clotting in the blood vessels by their smoothness, and the finely tuned balance of clotting factors.”

With the medical aspect covered, we move on to the religious side of the issue.

“JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES” BACKGROUND ON THE SUBJECT

Just so we know the official “Jehovah’s Witness” position on blood transfusions, we refer to approved Watchtower literature. In their 2005/2014 book titled, “What Does the Bible Really Teach?,” they claim on pages 128-131:

“Showing respect for blood. 10 After Cain killed his brother Abel, Jehovah told Cain: ‘Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground.’ (Genesis 4:10) When God spoke of Abel’s blood, he was speaking of Abel’s life. Cain had taken Abel’s life, and now Cain would have to be punished. It was as if Abel’s blood, or life, were crying out to Jehovah for justice. The connection between life and blood was again shown after the Flood of Noah’s day. Before the Flood, humans ate only fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts. After the Flood, Jehovah told Noah and his sons: ‘Every moving animal that is alive may serve as food for you.’ However, God set this restriction: ‘Only flesh with its life—its blood—you must not eat.’ (Genesis 1:29; 9:3, 4) Clearly, Jehovah links very closely the life and the blood of a creature.

“11 We show respect for blood by not eating it. In the Law that Jehovah gave the Israelites, he commanded: ‘If one of the Israelites… is hunting and catches a wild animal or a bird that may be eaten, he must pour its blood out and cover it with dust…. I said to the Israelites: ‘You must not eat the blood of any sort of flesh.’’ (Leviticus 17:13, 14) God’s command not to eat animal blood, first given to Noah some 800 years earlier, was still in force. Jehovah’s view was clear: His servants could eat animal meat but not the blood. They were to pour the blood on the ground—in effect, returning the creature’s life to God.

“12 A similar command rests upon Christians. The apostles and other men taking the lead among Jesus’ followers in the first century met to decide what commands had to be obeyed by all in the Christian congregation. They came to this conclusion: ‘The holy spirit [sic—J.W. don’t believe the Holy Spirit is a Person, or that He is God, which explains their usage of lowercase letters “holy spirit”—S.B.] and we ourselves have favored adding no further burden to you except these necessary things: to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from what is strangled [‘what is killed without draining its blood,’ footnote], and from sexual immorality.’ (Acts 15:28, 29; 21:25) So we must ‘keep abstaining from blood.’ In God’s eyes, our doing that is as important as our avoiding idolatry and sexually immorality.

“13 Does the command to abstain from blood include blood transfusions? Yes. To illustrate: Suppose a doctor were to tell you to abstain from alcoholic beverages. Would that simply mean that you should not drink alcohol but that you could have it injected into your veins? Of course not! Likewise, abstaining from blood means not taking it into our bodies at all. So the command to abstain from blood means that we should not allow anyone to transfuse blood into our veins. [That illustration of the doctor and the injected alcohol is such a flimsy, comical, and downright absurd appeal!! What do J.W. do when they accidentally bite their lip or tongue and swallow their own blood?!—S.B.]

“14 What if a Christian is badly injured or is in need of major surgery? Suppose doctors say that he must have a blood transfusion or he will die. Of course, the Christian would not want to die. In an effort to preserve God’s precious gift of life, he would accept other kinds of treatment that do not involve the misuse of blood. Hence, he would seek such medical attention if that is available and would accept a variety of alternatives to blood.

“15 Would a Christian break God’s law just to stay alive a little longer in this system of things? Jesus said, ‘Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.’ (Matthew 16:25) We do not want to die. But if we tried to save our present life by breaking God’s law, we would be in danger of losing everlasting life. We are wise, then, to put our trust in the rightness of God’s law, with full confidence that if we die for any cause, our Life-Giver will remember us in the resurrection and restore to us the precious gift of life.—John 5:28, 29; Hebrews 11:6.

“16 Today, faithful servants of God firmly resolve to follow his direction regarding blood. They will not eat it in any form. Nor will they accept blood for medical reasons. They are sure that the Creator of blood knows what is best for them. Do you believe that he does?”

With the religious aspect covered, now we move on the Holy Scriptures.

BIBLE BACKGROUND ON THE SUBJECT

Doubtless, the Bible is very clear that life is in the blood. Blood is important in God’s eyes because it represents life. The Russellites are in perfect agreement with the Bible on these points, and we do not fault them here. We read in Leviticus chapter 17, the Mosaic Law: “[10] And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. [11] For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. [12] Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood. [13] And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. [14] For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.”

The consumption of blood was clearly forbidden in the Law of Moses. Jews were in no way to eat the blood of animals. They were to drain the meat of all blood before partaking of that flesh. Please notice the supplemental passages included below for your consideration.

Leviticus 3:17: “It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood.” Leviticus 7:26-27: “Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings. Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.” Leviticus 19:26: “Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.” Deuteronomy 12:16,23-24: “Only ye shall not eat the blood; ye shall pour it upon the earth as water…. Only be sure that thou eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh. Thou shalt not eat it; thou shalt pour it upon the earth as water.” Deuteronomy 15:23: “Only thou shalt not eat the blood thereof; thou shalt pour it upon the ground as water.” First Samuel 14:34: “…and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood….”

What God was really telling Israel was that their life was not in animals’ blood. He was their life, and they were to rely on Him for life. In the Israeli Mosaic economy, as the Book of Leviticus delineates, various animal sacrifices were to be offered for sins. God’s focus was to ultimately point to Messiah’s shed blood, which would not be offered on Calvary until many centuries later. That animals’ blood was important in that it represented—or was typical of—the blood of God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. In effect, the only blood Israel was to “partake of” was the shed blood of Jesus Christ (the only source of true life)!

Let us take some time to address the Acts chapter 15 verses that the “Jehovah’s Witness” appeals to concerning this topic. Like all religious groups, they do not understand how to “rightly divide the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15), approaching the Bible dispensationally, without getting hung up on Israeli practices and promises. During the Acts period, Paul’s Gentile converts (the Church the Body of Christ) were to conduct their lives in such a way so as to not offend three groups of Jewish people: (1) the Law-keeping members of the Little Flock (Israel’s believing remnant), (2) the unsaved Jews meeting in the various synagogues around the then-known world, and (3) the Jewish members of the Body of Christ who were having trouble leaving behind the old system of worship they had grown up with. You can see these people mentioned in 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, Acts chapter 15, Romans 14:1-23, and 1 Corinthians 10:23-33. (For more information, please see our “yoga” and “1 Corinthians chapter 8” studies linked at the end of this article.)

That Acts transitional period—from prophecy to mystery—gave rise to the various disagreements that ultimately led to the Acts chapter 15 apostolic conference at Jerusalem. (Which, you will remember, contains some of the pet verses of the Russellites). Were Paul’s Gentile converts obligated to follow the Law of Moses as a means for salvation? That was the basic question to be settled in Acts chapter 15.

Notice verses 1-5 of Acts chapter 15: “[1] And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren [Paul’s Gentile converts], and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. [2] When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question. [3] And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren. [4] And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them. [5] But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.”

Now, read verses 19-21: “[19] Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: [20] But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. [21] For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.”

And verses 22-31: “[22] Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren: [23] And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia. [24] Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment: [25] It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, [26] Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. [27] We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth. [28] For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; [29] That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. [30] So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle: [31] Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.”

The context of abstaining from blood is with reference to the religious system the pagans are involved with. Notice again: “that they should abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood” (verse 20; cf. verse 29). The context is not a medical procedure—that is, a blood transfusion—but rather a religious practice. For a Russellite to grab these verses and read something into them is so dishonest. In fact, he or she (as with many issues) is forcing his or her own religious dogma into the Bible text rather than letting the Bible text speak for itself. Think about this.

If following these verses really were so important to the Watchtower Society, why did they not comment (in their “official” explanation quoted above) on the fact that the passage has to do with abstaining from false religion? See, a Russellite is not interested in teaching a Bible passage for what it says; the goal is simply to select and emphasize what the denomination stresses in the verse. It is that “pet” interpretation of the verse that makes the religious sect unique: to ignore the slant is to diminish the system’s distinctiveness, and this they refuse to do. That is the plain and simple truth. But, we will be bolder in exposing their dishonesty.

We ignore the part about foods offered to idols, we ignore the part about fornication (illicit and sexual perversion in pagan religious services), we ignore the part about things strangled (dietary laws), and we single out the part about the blood! That is typical religious tradition—the stressing of parts of verses instead of whole verses taught IN CONTEXT. Many a times I have caught Russellites in-person, visiting me at my home, being dishonest with Bible passages. They will freely admit they do not know everything about the verses they are quoting, but they are sure of certain “pet” phrases in the verses! Above all, they prove themselves to be servants of someone OTHER than Jesus Christ (JEHOVAH God the Son). They are unable to articulate a clear Gospel message. They do not make the message of cross of Calvary clear but rather rattle on and on about “God’s kingdom.” If they cannot get straight the most important part of the Bible (the Gospel), we need not wonder why they stumble over something so trivial as blood transfusions!

Before we leave this subject, it would do us well to read again paragraph 15 of the blood section of the Watchtower Society’s book, “What Does the Bible Really Teach?” “15 Would a Christian break God’s law just to stay alive a little longer in this system of things? Jesus said, ‘Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.’ (Matthew 16:25) We do not want to die. But if we tried to save our present life by breaking God’s law, we would be in danger of losing everlasting life.” (Bold emphasis mine.)

Did we not notice that the Jehovah’s Witness has no real security in his religion? (I just confirmed this with an ex-J.W. friend of mine.) Having wrested (twisted) Matthew 16:25, they wonder if they may “lose” everlasting life by trying to save their physical life with a blood transfusion! No wonder they fear blood transfusions—such a medical treatment means Hell for them! In other words, the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall is just another typical works-religion group. You have to strive to make God accept you—and, if you break His laws, “[you] would be in danger of losing everlasting life!” (Their words, not mine, please note!)

So, in closing, “What does the Bible say about blood transfusions?” NOTHING!

Is it truly a good deed if done for selfish reasons?

IS IT TRULY A GOOD DEED IF DONE FOR SELFISH REASONS?

by Shawn Brasseaux

Someone posted this question on social media not long ago. That person received a variety of mixed responses: overall, though, some basically said yes and others said no. Can it be a good deed even though it has underlying selfish motives? Upon initial glance, it seems like a tough question. Nevertheless, if we let the Bible, not works-religion, be our authority, this question will be a breeze to answer!

Religion has trained many of us so well. It is like inebriation—drunkenness. In fact, Revelation 18:3 speaks of the (future) Antichrist’s religion as having, “the wine of the wrath of her fornication.” Revelation 17:2 says of that false religion: “the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.” Rather than being faithful to one, true God, these followers of the Antichrist (including unbelieving Jews) will be “sleeping around” with idols! Religion, while bearing similarities to prostitution, is also likened unto drug abuse because it causes you to lose all sense of reason. You can accept the most ridiculous ideas as true… and yet, you will never discern the difference between right and wrong because your spiritual senses have been numbed!

It is assumed that a deed must be good if it appears good. This is a common idea carried over from works-religion. Still, the Lord Jesus had an interesting comment about this issue in Matthew 7:11: “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” Notice how Jesus talked about “evil” parents giving “good gifts” to their children. The gifts were good, but where the parents good? No! “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children….” No matter what they did on the outside, on the inside they were still “evil!” Jesus singled out their sin nature—they “be evil.” Their deed never changed the underlying character, and it was the character most offensive to God. Men look on the outside; God looks on the inside. God is concerned with the heart attitude.

“Is it truly a good deed if done for selfish reasons?” Actually, the answer is built into the question. Sin, at its very root, is doing what you want instead of what God wants. As a wise preacher once said, “Isaiah 53:6 is the best definition of sin in all the Bible!” “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way….” Paul the Apostle in Romans 1:25 picks up on Isaiah’s comments: “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” Sinners by nature are selfish. They want to be their own authority. Quoting the unbelieving Jews and the unbelieving Romans rejecting Father God and His Son Jesus Christ at Calvary, Psalm 2:3 says: “Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.” They oppose God’s rule over them. They have their own agenda, and seek to carry it out. They could not care less about the Creator’s purpose and plan for them!

The three Members of the Godhead are selfless. They live for each other’s benefit rather than their own individual benefit. Father God seeks to glorify His Son, Jesus Christ, rather than Himself. Jesus Christ seeks to glorify His Father rather than Himself. The Holy Spirit seeks to glorify Jesus Christ rather than Himself. The Father seeks to glorify the Holy Spirit instead of Himself. These attributes are so far beyond (sinful) human experience. Just look at these words of Scripture, a sample of the Bible texts on the subject:

  • John 8:54: “Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:….”
  • John 16:13-14 (Jesus speaking): “[13] Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. [14] He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”
  • Philippians 2:3-5: “[3] Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. [4] Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. [5] Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:….”

If we have the life of Christ in us, and we do if we have the indwelling Holy Spirit (cf. Galatians 2:20; Romans 8:9), then the only works He can produce in us is good works. Those good works would not involve selfishness, since His good works done on the Earth (His earthly ministry) did not involve selfish motives either. Go back to Philippians 2:3-5 above. As God sees it, a deed is not good unless it is something done to glorify Him. If you are doing something seeking to gain something for yourself, that is self-centeredness. A selfish deed, no matter if it appears good, is actually a bad deed. That is what sin is (Isaiah 53:6). That is what “evil” is (Matthew 7:11). Saying a selfish deed can be good is like arguing that water is dry—it is an oxymoron and makes no sense in light of Bible verses!

Whenever we who have believed on the Lord Jesus as personal Saviour, feel and behave selfish, that is the old sin nature. We are walking in the flesh when we should be walking in the Spirit, the power that God has given us in Christ to overcome sin on a daily basis. Glorifying Father God should be the reason for everything that we do. We have not been left on Earth to serve ourselves. Christian living is not self-living; it is self-giving. Jesus Christ did not conduct His earthly ministry in order to draw attention to Himself. He did it to bring honor to His Heavenly Father. If ever we are living for self, that is not Christian living, and it is not a good deed. If we want to serve ourselves, we should not have become Christians. We should have stayed lost in sin. It makes sense for sinners to be selfish. It does not make sense for saints to be selfish!

SUPPLEMENTAL: MATTHEW 7:21-23

The Lord Jesus issued some startling words in Matthew 7:21-23, concerning “good” works: “[21] Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [22] Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [23] And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” These works were no doubt good in appearance—preaching in Jesus’ name, casting out devils in Jesus’ name, and doing many “wonderful” works in Jesus’ name. Surely, they “praised” Jesus! Oh, but Jesus said in verse 23 that it was “iniquity.” It did not matter what they did or how nice it appeared! They did not follow Father God’s will; they were doing what they wanted (selfishness). There was no faith in Father’s words. It was just religious busyness. The Lord Jesus thus aptly called it “wickedness.” And, guess what? He said they are not entering the Kingdom of Heaven! He said they are not entering the Kingdom of Heaven! He said they are not entering the Kingdom of Heaven!

What is “the foolishness of God” in 1 Corinthians 1:25?

WHAT IS “THE FOOLISHNESS OF GOD” IN 1 CORINTHIANS 1:25?

by Shawn Brasseaux

Can God be foolish? First Corinthians 1:25 says, “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” Why does the Bible say “the foolishness of God?” In this Bible study, we hope to compare verses and shed light on this expression.

To get the thought-flow, we begin at verse 17: “[17] For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. [18] For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. [19] For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. [20] Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? [21] For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. [22] For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: [23] But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; [24] But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. [25] Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

Jesus Christ, from heaven, post-resurrection, commissioned the Apostle Paul to preach the Gospel, a new set of Good News never known to man until now. This Gospel is called “the Gospel of the Grace of God” in Acts 20:24. Water baptism was not a part of this Gospel message as it had been with the Gospel of the Kingdom in Matthew 28:19 and Mark 16:16 (cf. Acts 2:38). While the 12 Apostles were indeed sent by Jesus Christ to water baptize converts, Paul was not sent to water baptize. True, Paul water baptized during the Acts period, but that was only temporary, necessary to communicate to Israel the fact that Paul was replacing Peter and the 11. Paul eventually quit water baptizing. The emphasis of Paul’s Gospel was not religious ceremonies (namely, water baptism). Neither was it delivered by smooth, eloquent Greek oratory (rhetoric). Romans 16:17-18 talks about such false teachers who use “good [kind, appealing] words and fair [beautiful] speeches.” Employing elaborate vocabulary, they sound attractive enough to reel in supporters by the masses. Think of the rich chanting and singing in the Roman Catholic Mass, the multi-syllable vocabularies of many theologians and clergy members, and so on.

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 2:2,4: “And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God…. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power.” Such “wisdom of words” would make the cross of Christ “of none effect,” or nullify it, for eloquence would make Paul the speaker the issue instead of Jesus Christ, the Saviour, the issue. The Apostle, although educated, thus refrained from using flattering, extravagant words to attract people. Remember, the wisdom to be declared in the Gospel was not Paul’s wisdom, but God’s wisdom. Man’s wisdom was not important concerning the Gospel; God’s wisdom was to have the preeminence, and it did in Paul’s ministry (this should also be of our ministry).

Since Paul did not resort to eloquent speeches and ostentatious phrases, his preaching was at variance with religious norms. He did not sound like “just another religious leader.” When compared to religious standards, he appeared and sounded silly. He was not sent to water baptize?! (Nearly every religion reveres some water ceremony!) He was traveling throughout the Roman Empire, preaching that the cross of Calvary—when a Jew had died—was “the power of God.” Calvary’s cross, even today, is ridiculed. “How can a dead Jew save me from hell?,” it is still asked. “What kind of God would see value in sending His Son to die in such a cruel, painful manner?,” it is still inquired. “How is victory accomplished when Jesus let the Romans kill Him?,” it is still asked. First Corinthians 1:18 could not be any plainer: “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” The lost people of the world do not have spiritual eyes. All they have is human wisdom, and that is not enough to understand the things of God. Therefore, they scoff at and dismiss that which they do not know.

God in His wisdom actually fixed it to where mankind will never be able to figure out Him or His plan. It is for this reason that intellectuals laugh at Christians, invent anti-God arguments, and attack His Bible. Yes, they appear to sound smart, “untouchable,” clothed in their beautiful robes of scholarship and rationalism. “Me? Need God? Ha! I have degrees from prestigious institutions! My education causes me to live in reality! I do not believe in some ‘old man in the sky!’ I think for myself! Get away from me with that ‘book of superstition!’” All the while, they are totally oblivious to true wisdom. They have pompously ignored the fact that all the knowledge humanity has gained as a whole—which is much, much more than what they know individually—is just a fraction of the information in existence. In that realm of unknown wisdom, we find God’s wisdom, that which they will never grasp. Without this discernment to make sense of it, they simply dismiss it as quickly as possible using whatever convenient means.

As it is written in Isaiah 55:8-9: “[8] For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. [9] For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” First Corinthians chapter 1 continues: “[19] For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. [20] Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?” This is a quote from Isaiah 29:14, which is God’s response to the Israelites exalting the opinions of men above His Word. He will let them have their way—spiritual ignorance!

In fact, let us turn to Isaiah chapter 29 to notice the parallel: “[9] Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink. [10] For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered. [11] And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: [12] And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned. [13] Wherefore the LORD said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: [14] Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.” By using His wisdom to outsmart man in his “wisdom,” God proved man’s wisdom was really foolishness! First Corinthians 1:20 again: “Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?”

With respect to 1 Corinthians chapter 1, we continue: “[21] For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

Again, verse 21 says that God, in His wisdom, planned it to where man could use his wisdom and still be unable to reach the level of divine wisdom. Man would remain at the spiritual I.Q. of “0” and God would be ranked as “infinity.” In God’s wisdom, He did not choose to save from hell people who went to seminary for a decade. He did not choose to save from hell those who joined a church, gave a donation to a ministry, kept a list of rules and regulations, got water baptized, held on, held out, recited a book of prayers, helped the poor and homeless, promised to live their lives for Him, and so on. These are classic responses in religion, but Paul never preached them. Again, that is why Paul was such an “oddball,” and that is why we grace-preaching Christians are equally foolish to the world. We do not sound religious and we claim not to be “religious,” yet we believe in God and the Bible. They see us as the most mysterious paradox of all!

The Bible says what pleased God was to “save them that believe” (1 Corinthians 1:21). While the Gospel of Grace sounded foolish, what was on display was God’s wisdom and man’s natural inability to grasp it. Apart from the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit, we Christians could not understand it either (see chapter 2, which we cannot discuss here for brevity’s sake). As we read, “For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom” (verse 22). The Jews were interested in miracles, the Greeks pursued wisdom, but the thrust of Paul’s Gospel was not miraculous demonstrations or human philosophy. “[23] But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; [24] But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. [25] Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”

Paul went and “preached Christ crucified” (verse 23). The Jews to which he preached during Acts saw no victory or power in a dead Jew on a cross. The Greeks to which he preached during Acts heard no flattering oratory or polished expressions. Thus, “unto the Jews a stumblingblock”—the unbelieving Jews who heard Paul preach saw Jesus crucified as nothing more than a scandal of weakness most unpleasant and worthy of being shunned. (See them reject it in Acts 13:45!) Furthermore, “unto the Greeks foolishness”—the unbelieving Gentiles who heard Paul preach saw Jesus crucified as nothing more than absurdity. (See them laugh at it in Acts 17:32!) However, the believing Jews and Greeks/Gentiles who saw value in the words of God that Paul was preaching, these saints saw with spiritual eyes Jesus Christ “the power of God” (Jews) and “the wisdom of God” (Greeks). They were willing to let the Holy Spirit teach them!

Now, we (finally!) get to verse 25: “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” On one hand, the “foolishness of God” is how the Greeks viewed the Gospel of Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection as sufficient payment for our sins. On the other hand, the “weakness of God” is how the Jews saw that Gospel of Grace. That God would do for man what he could never do for himself? Outlandish! That God would become a Man and die for man’s sin by letting man put Him to death? Strange! That there could be life in such a death? Folly! That a dead Man, totally deceased, could return to life and never die again? No! That such information could be conveyed without fancy phraseology and scholarly wisdom? Ridiculous! That God would do away with religious works as means to approach Him? Heresy! (No wonder Paul’s audience was so rattled! Beloved, no wonder they give us such bizarre reactions today! Hahaha)

First Corinthians 1:25 does not mean God does foolish things or thinks foolish thoughts. Remember, “the thought of foolishness is sin” (Proverbs 24:9). God cannot sin; therefore, He cannot think foolishly or act foolishly. It is talking about what appears to be, or what seems to be, foolish. Again, man, because of his limitations, cannot fairly evaluate what God does or thinks. Man in and of himself does not have enough strength or knowledge to gauge spiritual matters. Therefore, God’s thoughts and actions are so foreign to him. Lest he appear foolish and/or weak, his only hope is to explain away God’s thoughts and actions as “foolish.” You can go on into chapter 2 of 1 Corinthians to see this, particularly verse 14: “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

We end this by saying, “What a wise God we Christians serve!”

What is “gehenna?” Is that the same as hell?

WHAT IS “GEHENNA?” IS THAT THE SAME AS HELL?

by Shawn Brasseaux

Gehenna(Strong’s G1067: γέεννα) is the Greek name for the Valley of Hinnom. The Hebrew is “Ge-Hinnom.” This ravine or valley is just outside of Jerusalem to the southwest. Today it is known as Wadi er-Rababi. It first appears in the Bible in Joshua 18:16, as a boundary of the tribe of Benjamin. Later, it became a place of despicable acts.

“And they [the Jews in Jerusalem] have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart” (Jeremiah 7:31). “Tophet” meant “place of fire.” There was a gigantic bronze idol in the Valley of Hinnom. This is where the Jews sacrificed their infants and young children alive to the pagan fire god Molech. “Hinnom” means “lamentation” (as in the cries of the children being burned alive). Jeremiah 7:32 and Jeremiah 19:6 call it “Tophet,” “Valley of the Son of Hinnom,” and “Valley of Slaughter.” Jewish Kings Ahaz and Manasseh sacrificed their children here (2 Kings 16:3; 2 Kings 21:6; 2 Chronicles 28:3; 2 Chronicles 33:6). The Valley of Hinnom is called “Topheth” in 2 Kings 23:10—King Josiah ceremonially defiled it in order to abolish the child sacrifices there.

In New Testament times, it was a trash dump where Jerusalem’s garbage was deposited and burned. Even the bodies of dead animals and unburied criminals were brought here. One Bible dictionary states, because of the valley’s history, “After the OT period, Jewish apocalyptic writers began to call the Valley of Hinnom the entrance to hell, later hell itself.” The Greek word gehenna is found 12 times in our New Testament Scriptures—Jesus used the term 11 times, and James used it one time. It is translated “hell” every time. On three occasions, gehenna is paired with πῦρ (G4442, pyr, “fire”) to read “hell fire” (Matthew 5:22; Matthew 18:9; Mark 9:47).

For now, just notice the term as used in the Bible:

  • Matthew 5:22: “But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell [gehenna] fire.”
  • Matthew 5:29: “And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell [gehenna].”
  • Matthew 5:30: “And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell [gehenna].”
  • Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell [gehenna].”
  • Matthew 18:9: “And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell [gehenna] fire.”
  • Matthew 23:15: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell [gehenna] than yourselves.”
  • Matthew 23:33: “Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell [gehenna]?”
  • Mark 9:43: “And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell [gehenna], into the fire that never shall be quenched:”
  • Mark 9:45: “And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell [gehenna], into the fire that never shall be quenched:”
  • Mark 9:47: “And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell [gehenna] fire:”
  • Luke 12:5: “But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell [gehenna]; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.”
  • James 3:6: “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell [gehenna].”

SOME WORDS ABOUT GEHENNA AND THE CULTS

Certain cults, particularly the “Jehovah’s Witnesses,” will go to great lengths to diminish the Bible teaching of eternal judgment. “Gehenna” is a term to which they often appeal in an effort to prove their denominational tenets. They will say that these instances of “hell” are not a place of everlasting torment, but just references to the trash dump outside of Jerusalem. That is, Jesus was making reference to the fires of the Valley of Hinnom rather than literal flames of everlasting hell. As I pointed out to a Jehovah’s Witness who came to my house just recently trying to promote her church’s teachings, the “hell” (gehenna) of the above verses goes far beyond the flames of Hinnom.

Take the following two verses for example:

  • Mark 9:43: “And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell [gehenna], into the fire that never shall be quenched:”
  • Mark 9:45: “And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell [gehenna], into the fire that never shall be quenched:”

The flames here “shall never be quenched.” Fires in the Valley of Hinnom have long since died out (which the Jehovah’s Witness is forced to admit). Surely, no thinking person could ever say that the gehenna of Mark 9:43 and Mark 9:45 are man’s temporary fires on Earth! This is especially accentuated by verses 44, 46, and 48: “Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched….Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched…. Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.” By the way, verses 44 and 46 are omitted from the modern Greek text and modern English versions (including NIV, NASB, ESV, and of course, the Jehovah’s Witness New World Translation!). This way, they diminish the explicit warnings.

Now, consider the following verses:

  • Luke 12:5: “But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell [gehenna]; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.”
  • Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell [gehenna].”

This is certainly not the Valley of Hinnom. Notice how only God has the power here to toss people into this gehenna. This gehenna involves not just the death of the physical body but also the soul. Such is hardly the language of any trash dump, no matter how intense its flames may be! If we study the way the Bible uses the term “gehenna,” provided we not want to form a denominational conclusion, we will discover that the Bible is speaking of something far more than just a trash dump.

CONCLUSION

Jesus took the term gehenna and taught doctrine of eternal importance. In a Jew’s mind, gehenna was the worst and most unclean place to imagine. It was there that their ancestors were burned in pagan human sacrifices! Also, it was where they would take garbage for disposal—including the corpses of dead animals and criminals! Our Lord Jesus warned of something far worse than this “trash dump.” God has a trash dump as well, and it is where He disposes the souls of those who refuse to trust His Word. He has no use for them in His program for creation, they are the vilest of all living creatures, and now they will burn for their transgressions for all of eternity! Indeed, that is the worst of all. But, the Bible says it, and the only way people go hell is because they wanted to go! God has offered His Son Jesus Christ on Calvary’s cross as a fully-satisfying payment for our sins, that simple faith in Him alone could get us into heaven. But, if we want to suffer the flames of hell forever and ever and ever, never satisfying the wrath of God, He will give us the eternal abode of the damned!

Is Luke 16:19-31 a parable?

IS LUKE 16:19-31 A PARABLE?

by Shawn Brasseaux

In an attempt to sidestep the Biblical doctrine of eternal judgment in hellfire, certain groups have resorted to watering down one of the clearest and most graphic passages of hell. Such people say that Luke 16:19-31—the account of the Rich Man and Lazarus—is merely a “parable,” figurative language rather than literal truth. They believe there was no historical rich man who actually woke up tormented in hell, and no historical beggar named Lazarus who actually woke up comforted in paradise. After all, their denominational doctrine demands that the dead be unconscious, completely unaware of their surroundings. Furthermore, they protest, “A loving God would never send people to an eternal hell.” They particularly pick on a Bible term found in the passage—“Abraham’s bosom.” If “Abraham’s bosom” is not literal, they assert, then neither is the rest of the passage—especially the part about “tormented in this flame.” Friends, in this study, we will critically evaluate Luke 16:19-31. Literal? Or, figurative?

Dear readers, first things first. Before commenting, we must read Luke 16:19-31: “[19] There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: [20] And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, [21] And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. [22] And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; [23] And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. [24] And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. [25] But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. [26] And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. [27] Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: [28] For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. [29] Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. [30] And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. [31] And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”

Now to our thorough analysis!

Now that you have written your answers, we move on to make some general verse comparisons and present some basic facts from Scripture. First and foremost, parables bear a certain primary characteristic in Scripture. Contrary to popular belief, parables are not teaching aids. They are meant to make the truth less clear. That is, parables are meant to hide the truth from people who have rejected the truth God had previously revealed to them. To repeat, parables are meant to confuse rather than to explain.

The Lord Jesus Christ admitted this quite plainly in Matthew 13:10-15: “[10] And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? [11] He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. [12] For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. [13] Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. [14] And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: [15] For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.”

In light of what the Lord Jesus Himself said about parables, Luke 16:19-31, if it were a parable, should have made the truth less clear. Did it? In light of what the Lord Jesus Himself said about parables, Luke 16:19-31, if it were literal, should have made the truth quite clear. Did it? Then, my dear friends, it should be very apparent to you as to whether or not Luke 16:19-31 is a parable! But, we will take it a step further.

CONTEMPLATION #2

Luke 16:19 does not begin with, “And he speak this parable unto them….” If the account of the rich man and Lazarus were a parable, the Holy Spirit should have made sure to notify the audience that this “graphic story” was merely a parable and not literal truth. Remember, this passage has been used for centuries to defend the reality of eternal hellfire. The implications are quite severe if we take Luke 16:19-31 as literal truth. Should not the Holy Spirit, having foreseen the alleged “misusage” of the passage in the coming centuries, made every attempt in the context to indicate that it was symbolic and nonliteral? You can search Luke chapter 16 for the rest of eternity, my dear readers, and never see where Jesus clearly indicated verses 19 through 31 as figurative (a parable).

Furthermore, the last parable of chapter 16 (in the context) ended with verse 8. That was over 10 verses prior to Jesus mentioning the rich man and Lazarus. Jesus began to speak literal truths from verse 9 of chapter 16 onward and into chapter 17. (We will address this quite thoroughly later, in point #7). If it were a parable, Jesus left much room for ambiguities and uncertainties; He never explained what the elements symbolized. This lack of explanation is the strongest indication that no symbolism was involved. Luke 16:19-31 was literal.

The only logical, Bible-believing view, is that Luke 16:19-31 was not a parable, but literal history. Just as we are aware of our surroundings today (we are on planet Earth), Lazarus knew he was in paradise (the heart of the Earth, the spirit world for believers of that time) and the rich man knew that he was in torments (the heart of the Earth, the spirit world for unbelievers even today). But, we will take it another step further!

CONTEMPLATION #3

Of all the parables recorded in Matthew through Luke (John does not contain parables), not one of them contains a person’s name. Check it out for yourself if you doubt me. In stark contrast, Luke 16:20 bears the name “Lazarus” (also see verses 23,24, and 25). The name was not a mistake. It is mentioned four times. Why? Lazarus was a literal, flesh-and-blood individual like us; he was not some imaginary character in a horror story. He was just as literal and physical as Abraham was, and “Abraham” was also mentioned by name in the passage (see verses 25 and 29). This great detail is never found in any of Jesus’ parables. Again, check it out for yourself if you do not believe me. Okay, we take it yet another step further!

CONTEMPLATION #4

As we mentioned in point #2, the Holy Spirit should have made it clear to identify the meaning of Luke 16:19-31. What was the purpose of telling His audience this if it were a parable without historical basis? If Jesus, when saying, “I am tormented in this flame,” meant something other than literal suffering in a literal fire, why did He not define that expression in literal terms for us? The same could be said of “Lazarus,” “rich man,” “Abraham,” “great gulf fixed,” and all the other elements in the passage. Jesus left them undefined. Why? The only logical conclusion is that those words were to be taken at face value. He gave no alternative meaning for them because there was no alternative meaning for them. Our Lord Jesus said exactly what He meant about the rich man and Lazarus, and He meant exactly what He said about the rich man and Lazarus. If we disagree with Him, we need to just come out and say that we do not believe the Bible. We should not be hiding behind some lame “figurative language” defense. (We will discuss this in our next point.) Dear friends, may we not be like all those unbelieving hearts that simply reject the simple revelations from God, just so they may keep their manmade church traditions! We take it another step….

CONTEMPLATION #5

When the Prophet Ezekiel warned Israel about God’s coming judgment upon them, note the following in Ezekiel 20:45-49: “[45] Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, [46] Son of man, set thy face toward the south, and drop thy word toward the south, and prophesy against the forest of the south field; [47] And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the Lord; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein. [48] And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it: it shall not be quenched. [49] Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! they say of me, Doth he not speak parables?”

Did you catch it? Unbelievers equate “fire” (judgment) in the Bible with “parables.” Bible rejecters are those who do not believe in God’s literal fire of judgment! Would a Bible believer ever conclude God’s fiery judgment a “parable?” Not according to the Bible! What does this say about people who diminish Luke 16:19-31, hellfire, to a “parable?” We can take it another step!

CONTEMPLATION #6

Those who relish in “toning down” Luke 16:19-31 especially appeal to the Bible’s term “Abraham’s bosom” (see verses 22-23). To them, this figurative expression proves the whole passage is nonliteral. Abraham’s actual breast is not involved, so the entire story is fabricated… or so they say. For example, to quote official “Jehovah’s Witnesses’” doctrine, “[The] Rich man and Lazarus account [is] no proof of eternal torment. Fire [is] no more literal than Abraham’s bosom.” Friends, these dear “Russellites” are woefully ignorant of the English language. Of course, they are not interested in using English properly anyway. They just want to defend their denomination… whatever the cost!

“Bosom,” in the English language, does not necessarily mean a literal breast, as in someone resting against your upper chest. “Bosom,” as used in John’s Gospel, is most definitely Jesus’ literal breast, His upper chest (see John 13:23,25). Yet, our English word “bosom” can also mean “a state of enclosing intimacy; warm closeness.” In a similar manner, we use our English word “heart.” In one sense, the term “heart” refers to the physical muscle that pumps literal blood throughout our literal, physical bodies. Yet, another sense of “heart” is our innermost being, our seat of emotions. For instance, think about the expression, “That person is close, or dear, to your heart.” Does that mean this person is literally resting against your chest? Of course not! Yet, this figurative phrase still communicates a literal truth. You have deep emotional connections with that individual. It has nothing to do with your heart muscle, either.

You are probably curious as to why the term “Abraham’s bosom” even appears in Luke 16:22-23. I will gladly tell you. Remember, it is the title of the place where believing Lazarus went upon death. It was also the place where Abraham’s soul resided (see verses 25,29). As you may know, Abraham is the classic believer in Scripture. He is called “the father of all them that believe” in Romans 4:11. All believers who had died up to the point of Luke chapter 16, they had died believing in the God of Abraham. They, going all the way back to Adam—the beginning of the world (Acts 3:21)—had also died with faith in the message of God’s earthly kingdom. Because Abraham is called “the father of them that believe,” his “bosom” indicates the close affinity he has with other believers from that Old Testament era, as well as their closeness with him. They are all children of God, having the righteousness of Jesus Christ credited to their account, and thus have an intimate relationship with the God of the Bible. They are (even today) still awaiting bodily resurrection to enter God’s earthly kingdom (see Job 19:25-27, for instance). This is in contrast with those unbelieving souls, such as the rich man, who are (even today) still experiencing torment in the flames of hell.

By the way, if we must nitpick at the phrase “Abraham’s bosom,” saying the passage is not literal because “bosom” is not literal, then we must also dismiss John 1:18 as nonliteral. “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” “Bosom” in John 1:18 is figurative and not literal, so should John 1:18 be believed literally? As in Luke 16:22-23, “bosom” in John 1:18 carries a literal truth. The Lord Jesus is not literally leaning on God’s breast, is He? Yet, even while using a figurative term, John 1:18 is conveying a literal truth. Jesus has an intimate relationship with His Heavenly Father. (Remember our comments about “heart?”) The same sense is applied to “Abraham’s bosom.” We take it another step further!

CONTEMPLATION #7

Dear friends, to have the richest understanding of Luke 16:19-31, we would have to come to a conclusion as to what it all means. If all the elements symbolize something else (as the case in a parable), then what do they all mean as a whole (as in a parable)? Remember, even parables have real-life applications. Luke 16:19-31, even if it were a parable, would still convey literal truths. It would by no means diminish God’s revelation. But, it is not a parable. Because of its serious nature, we had better take it most seriously.

As stated earlier, the easiest way to handle Luke 16:19-31 is to simply take it at face value. When you examine its context, the natural conclusion is that it means just what it says. The context is literal; Luke 16:19-31 must also be literal. Let me tell you how we deduce that.

Luke chapter 16 opens with Jesus talking to His disciples about being faithful servants. The issue of literal wealth is mentioned. Jesus says to His disciples in verse 13: “No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Please note verse 14: “And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.” The Pharisees dislike what Jesus said, so they mock Him. So, from verse 15 onward until verse 31 (end of chapter 16), Jesus addresses the covetous Pharisees. Notice how He is rebuking them for their materialism. “Mammon” is wealth, specifically avarice or excessive greed. They serve their wealth instead of His Heavenly Father. Now you know why Jesus proceeded to mention the “rich man” and Lazarus. That “rich man” was one of those Pharisees! Instead of serving the Creator God by faith, he too had idolized his wealth. Jesus was warning the Pharisees that they, unless they converted to Him, would literally wind up in that same literal, eternally hopeless state of “torment in flames” as that literal rich man’s literal soul! Their covetousness (idolatry) was literal and their eternal doom was equally literal! We take the argument one step further!

CONTEMPLATION #8

At this point, perhaps, the critics of Luke 16:19-31 have seen their error in dismissing it as a parable, a nonliteral portion of Scripture. We hope and pray that they have, for it is a very serious matter. However, even if one were to recognize the merits in this study’s foregoing statements, there always lingers that last-ditch effort to dismiss eternal judgment. I can just hear it being asked: “Oh, but, Brother Shawn, how can a loving God send people to eternal hellfire?” What a great question, my friend! I am so glad you asked. I am so glad to answer it as well!

“How can a loving God send people to eternal hellfire?” The Bible believer, stumped, is perhaps convinced that the “eternal-judgment critic” has made a valid point. Has he or she? Why, of course not! That “loving God,” according to Romans 5:8, did everything to keep everyone out of hell. He sent Jesus Christ His Son to experience His wrath on our behalf, to die for our sins, that we not have to go to eternal hellfire. We just need to trust alone what He did for us at Calvary. But, if someone wants to ignore that sacrifice of Christ, that person is “unloving” because he or she has rejected God’s love. God is still loving. If they reject God’s love, they wind up in hell because of their own fault. They sent themselves to hell. God did not send anyone anywhere. He let them go where they wanted! If I, out of love, offered a million dollars to a loved one who was a million dollars in debt, and that loved one refuses the money I offer, that in no way canceled my love for him or her. My love was independent of what her or she did with my offer. If he or she wants to stay in debt, that is his or her problem—not my fault! Likewise, if someone wants to stay in spiritual debt, do not blame God! (For more information, please see our related study linked at the end of this article. There, you will find a fuller treatment of that topic.)

CONCLUSION

There are at least seven reasons why Bible believers understand Luke 16:19-31 to be literal truth, not a parable.

  1. Firstly, according to the Lord Jesus Himself, parables are meant to confuse, to hide the truth from people who previously rejected it. There is nothing difficult to understand in Luke 16:19-31 unless we refuse to understand it. Luke 16:19-31 is a very graphic picture of eternal hellfire, which is why people attempt to dismiss it as “figurative.”
  2. Secondly, Luke 16:19-31 addresses a major doctrine. For it to be a parable and for Jesus never to make it clear to His audience that is a parable, is to force it to be literal. There are no ambiguities or uncertainties. Jesus expected His audience to take what He said at face value, and He expects us to do the same.
  3. Thirdly, parables do not contain names of people, and yet Luke 16:19-31 mentions “Lazarus” and “Abraham” by name several times.
  4. Fourthly, no additional explanation follows Luke 16:19-31. Jesus moved on to other topics in chapter 17. Since no other similar discourse is given in the context, Luke 16:19-31 must be self-explanatory and self-interpreting. Again, there is no mysterious language, confusion, or hidden truths—there are no characteristics of parables in Luke 16:19-31.
  5. Fifthly, unbelievers in Ezekiel’s day referred to God’s literally fiery judgment as nothing but “parables,” nonliteral statements. To say Luke 16:19-31, another passage about God’s fiery judgment, is a “parable,” is to echo the complaints of lost people, those who do not serve JEHOVAH God. Do you want to sound like a Bible rejecter? Then, my friend, you just keep on calling Luke 16:19-31 a “parable!”
  6. Sixthly, Luke 16:19-31 contains a nonliteral phrase—“Abraham’s bosom”—and yet the whole passage still contains literal truth. The same could be said of John 1:18, which uses the term “bosom” similarly.
  7. Lastly, the context of Luke 16:19-31 is literal covetousness. It is a passage spoken to literal idolaters, and serves as a clear warning of the eternal wrath coming on wealth-worshippers (idolaters). It is not some fairy tale meant to pass the time and take up space in God’s Word.

The God of the Bible is so loving that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in our place. If we go to hell, we do so by rejecting that love God commended to us! To reject God’s love is for usnot Him—to be “unloving.”

In short, my friends, either (1) we believe Luke 16:19-31 says exactly what it means and means exactly what it says, or (2) we just stay loyal to our manmade denomination. Those are the only two options.

SUPPLEMENTAL: BUT WHAT IF SOMEONE STILL PERSISTS LUKE 16:19-31 IS A PARABLE?

Suppose, for argument’s sake, Luke 16:19-31 is a parable. Does that help us any if we deny the existence of eternal hellfire? Certainly not! Actually, relegating Luke 16:19-31 to the status of parable only proves the extreme measures people will take when twisting the Bible to fit their theology. Notice the following:

  1. Read Matthew 13:3-8. Do you notice how mysterious this passage is? It has hidden truths, symbolic language. This was Jesus’ first parable, commonly called the Parable of the Sower. Who is the sower? What are the seeds? What is the stony place? What about the thorns? The fowls? Now, read verses 18-23. In these statements, Jesus defines the terms of the parable. His next words will provide additional explanation.
  2. In verses 24-30 of Matthew chapter 13, the Lord Jesus gives a second parable, known as the Parable of the Tares—clearly called a “parable” in Matthew 13:24 and 36. Here again, Jesus utilizes various symbols. He talks about a man sowing wheat, an enemy sowing tares (weeds) among the wheat, reapers gathering the wheat and the tares, the tares are tossed into a burning fire, and the wheat is gathered into a barn. The disciples come to Jesus, asking Him to explain Himself to them (verse 36). Verses 37-43 are the Lord Jesus defining each of the various elements of the parable. He claims to be the sower of the good seed (verse 37). The field is the world (verse 38). The good seed (wheat) are the children of the kingdom (verse 38). The tares are the children of Satan, or unbelieving Jews (verse 38). The enemy who sowed the tares is the Devil (verse 39). The harvest is the end of the world (verse 39). The reapers are the angels (verse 39). The burning fire is the eternal judgment of God in hell (verse 42). The barn is the earthly kingdom of God, reserved only for Israel’s believing remnant the children of the kingdom (verse 43; cf. verse 38). Please note the fire that burns in the parable (verse 30), is, interpreted by Jesus, to be a literal fire (verse 42). The Lord Jesus thought that the fire—even in the context of a parable—was still a fire, nothing diminished. The fire did not mean something else; it meant fire. Unless of course, we reject the Lord Jesus’ interpretation so we can hold on to our church traditions? So, even if Luke 16:19-31 were a parable, the word fire means just what it says. It is a fire.
  3. It should be pointed out that, in the context of a parable (Matthew 13:30), “reapers” symbolize angels (verse 39). In Luke 16:19-31, the word “angels” appears (verse 22). So, the passage is not a parable; it is already reduced to a literal meaning. Unless, we are going to wrest the Scriptures even further and say that “angels” are not literal beings but rather symbols of some other things.

Did not Jesus speak words not recorded in Scripture?

DID NOT JESUS SPEAK WORDS NOT RECORDED IN SCRIPTURE?

by Shawn Brasseaux

Recently, while listening to a Roman Catholic radio program, I heard an “apologist” claim, “Sacred Tradition is necessary because John says Jesus taught many things that were not recorded in Scripture.” Of course, he never actually read the verse from John. Whether he did this inadvertently or deliberately, he misquoted the verse. Perhaps he hoped no one would actually look in John, find the verse he was referring to, and read it to see he lied about what it said. The Holy Bible never said what this religious leader claimed it said! But, how many would actually look into the Bible and see if what he said was so, anyway? In this Bible study article, we will examine two of the “pet” passages the Roman Catholic Church uses to defend its “Scripture plus Tradition” position. What the Roman Church says about these passages, and what these passages actually say, are two different things entirely.

Having personally dealt with Roman Catholic “apologists” for many years now, I know they are very desperate for Scriptural justification. They will appeal to any verse—or any piece of a verse—to argue against Bible-quoting Protestants. No matter how greatly they abuse the Bible text, Roman Catholic apologists will never think twice about grabbing verses out of context. Their only goal is to defend their theology and church. Scripture means nothing to them if they cannot use it to teach what they want to teach.

Interestingly, Roman Catholics always enjoy touting: “If it were not for our church, you Protestants would not even have the Bible!” Of course, this is fallacious. Actually, the Bible, having almost no Roman Catholic doctrine in it, is a very poor example of a “Roman Catholic” book. Since the Bible says precious little about Roman Catholic beliefs, Romanists must largely appeal to “Sacred Tradition” as their authority. The “Tradition” portion—the bulk of their doctrine—is not found in the Bible. They quite readily admit it. But, they will go to great lengths to prove that the Bible allows for “Sacred Tradition” to speak where Sacred Scripture is silent. They claim: “John’s Gospel says Jesus taught many things that are not in the Bible. That is why we need Sacred Tradition!” Are they correct? Did John really endorse “Sacred Tradition?”

The Bible says in John 20:30-31: “[30] And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: [31] But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” As stated in our opening statements, religionists use this passage to form the following argument: “Jesus spoke more in His earthly ministry than what the Scriptures record.” Is that what these two verses are saying? Of course not! Re-read the verses. Did they say anything about what Jesus spoke and taught? No, but they did mention what Jesus did.

If you have ever read through Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, you noticed that the Gospel Record According to John is tremendously unique. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are very similar to each other. Hence, they are commonly called the “Synoptic Gospels.” In stark contrast, John takes a very different approach to Christ’s earthly ministry. John’s Gospel Record stands by itself. Unlike the so-called “Synoptic Gospels,” John documents just a small portion of Christ’s earthly ministry.

To form John’s Gospel, the Holy Spirit selected eight special miracles—seven of which are found only in John. They are not found in Matthew, Mark, or Luke. These eight special miracles in John’s Gospel are various aspects of what God wants to do for and with the nation Israel. Our King James Bible calls these eight particular miracles “signs” in John 20:30. Of course, Jesus performed more than eight miracles during His earthly ministry. This is all what John 20:30-31 is teaching. The Bible does not say, “And many other *words* truly *spoke* Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book.” That is the way Romanists want the verse to read, but, of course, it is a misreading. The emphasis in John 20:30-31 is on the eight special miracles recorded in John. John did not write about the other miracles featured in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

From the King James Bible, we read John 20:30-31 again: “[30] And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: [31] But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” For our Roman Catholic readers, we cite the New American (Catholic) Bible: “30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of (his) disciples that are not written in this book. 31 But these are written that you may (come to) believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.” The Catholic Bible and Protestant Bible are agreed that the emphasis of John 20:30-31 is on what Jesus did (miracles, signs) rather what He spoke and taught!

John 21:25 should be understood likewise: “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.” Once more, the stress is not on what Jesus taught but rather on what He did. Jesus’ miracles found in the book of John are just a portion of all the miracles He performed during those three years. John admitted his book focused on only eight of the miracles Jesus performed. For more information on how the Gospel Record of John is structured, please see our study linked at the end of this article, titled, “Should we use the book of John in evangelism?”

Please do not misunderstand me. No honest person could ever say that Matthew through John contains all the words Jesus spoke in three years. I gladly admit Jesus spoke and taught many things that are not recorded in the Bible. The statements He made “in red” are just a portion of what He spoke during three years. That does not matter because 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and Colossians 1:25 make it clear that, apart from the written Bible text, we need no more revelation from God. The Holy Spirit superintended what was to be included in the canon of Scripture. Even the Roman Catholic Bible has 27 New Testament books (just like the Protestant Bible). If you were looking for everything else Jesus spoke during those three years, you would be foolish to appeal to an organization that hates the words He did speak and record in His Bible! You study history, you study Roman Catholic theology, you speak to Roman seminarians, priests, bishops, et cetera, and you can see just how anti-Bible they really are. They laugh and criticize the Holy Bible. Would God have used these people to preserve His Word for us? (And they claim they are “Bible believers!” Ha!) I have seen non-Christian people treat the Bible with more respect than Roman Catholic priests treat it!

If we respect the words of God’s apostles, then we will accept what the Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “[16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17] That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” The Bible—the written text, the “Scriptures” (“script”=“writing”)—is all that we need to be “throughly furnished unto all good works.” Even the Roman Catholic Bible teaches that in these verses. Saint Paul argued that if it is not in the Bible, it is not a “good work.” If the Scriptures contain all that we need for a productive Christian life, and they do, then what is the purpose of Sacred Tradition? Church tradition is useless. It will only take away from the Scriptures that are completely sufficient for us.

Also, Paul wrote in Colossians 1:25 that he was made a minister of God to “fulfill [bring to completion] the word of God.” Saint Paul said he gave us the final revelation from God. Once he penned his second letter to young Timothy, Paul died, and the revelation from God was complete (refer to 2 Timothy 3:16-17). Paul died 2,000 years ago. Since his death, the Papacy and other Roman leaders have continually supplemented the Bible with “Sacred Tradition.” Saint Paul said that, once his ministry concluded, there would be no more information from God to mankind. Yet, the Roman Church continually appeals to the “church fathers” for further divine insight, men who lived decades and centuries after Saint Paul died! Why? They have no regard for what God has revealed in the Bible.

CONCLUSION

Friends, we would have to be willfully deceptive to say that John 20:30-31 and John 21:25 teach there is additional revelation from God apart from the written Word (the Bible). It is most ridiculous! Those verses are talking about what Jesus “did” rather than what He “taught” and “said.” John’s Gospel selected only eight miracles whereas Jesus did many more during His earthly ministry (see Matthew, Mark, and Luke). The purpose of John’s Gospel can be found in our study, “Should we use the book of John in evangelism?,” linked at the end of this article.)

SUPPLEMENTAL: EVEN IF THE BIBLE CRITICS WERE RIGHT….

For sake of argument, let us suppose that God wanted us to follow church tradition to compensate for the fact that not everything Jesus said is recorded in Scripture. How would we know that church tradition would carry just as much weight as Jesus’ written words? Would there not be a risk that church tradition would challenge, and take away, from the written Word of God? Why, of course—and it has! I have spoken to so many people who claim to follow the Bible and “Sacred Tradition,” but when I pressed them about it and asked them to explain themselves, they finally blurted out, “I do not follow the Bible! I do not care what the Bible says! I follow tradition!”

For people who supposedly familiarized themselves with “God’s Word” in catechetical school, for people who supposedly “studied the Bible” for years at seminary, Roman Catholic “apologists” know almost nothing about what the Bible teaches. No, they do not study the Bible. They simply study theology and then pick out Bible verses that even remotely resemble what they learned in school. Instead of getting their theology out of the Bible, they look for their theology in the Bible. If there is no Bible verse that clearly supports their particular denominational doctrine, they will find the Bible verse closest to what they believe and then force the verse to read their way. John 20:30-31 and John 21:25 are just two examples of this. Their handling of the verse may be phrased as,” A better reading is….” If they disagree with the verse, especially in a King James (Protestant) Bible, they say (most conveniently), “What a poor translation!” Well, in the case of John 20:30-31 and John 21:25, their Roman Catholic Bible says just what the Protestant Bible says. What Jesus “didnot what Jesus “taught!”

THE (REALLY) BAD NEWS

Notice a Christian minister’s observations from 50 years ago: “The condition of so many denominational churches seems hopeless. If we look only at the visible church we see more parties than prayer-meetings, more suppers and soup sales than revivals, more ‘gimmicks’ than Gospel preaching!… The Church is not in the world to entertain people with carnivals, bazaars, fairs, fish-fries, bingo, and dances in the church basement!” That brother, now in heaven with the Lord, had no idea of the stains and stigmas Christendom would associate itself with in the coming decades. If “so many denominational churches [seemed] hopeless” a half-century ago, what would he say if he were here today in this age of “ecclesiastical entertainment?!”

Indubitably, Christians should be known for a clear Gospel message. In reality, most professing Christians have no idea what the Gospel even is! When people think of “Christians,” they usually think of thousands of confusing denominations. They think of superstitions, fanaticism, scams, foolishness, and so on. They call to memory stained-glass windows, robes, sex scandals, complex prayer patterns, candles, rituals, strict obligations, self-righteousness, jumping and screaming, “judgmentalism,” preachers’ private jets, multi-million-dollar “church” mansions, et cetera. As Christians, we have the greatest message the world has ever known or will ever know, and we are too busy focusing on stupid things—making sure we keep every last church ordinance, paying every last penny to the collection plate, smiling and dancing on stage, hosting parties and ‘worship’ extravaganzas, uttering the prescribed prayers at a certain amount said at the predetermined times of day, traveling with our ‘healing’ campaigns as we grow older and sicker ourselves, and so on. Beloved, no wonder people laugh at the name of “Jesus Christ!” Notice the 40,000-plus groups that claim Him as their Leader. For centuries, these same groups have constantly argued about what He taught and commanded. When people think of “Christians,” they usually think of some political position (here in the United States, the so-called “right-wing nuts” and “paranoid conspiracy theorists who question everything”). No wonder people say, “Hopeless!”

After glancing at the professing “Christian Church” today, the average person—lost or saved—cannot help but conclude God’s Word has failed. Perhaps they would voice it more bluntly with, “Ha! The Bible is ‘God’s Word,’ yeah sure. And just where is this ‘God’ in the ‘Christian Church?’ Where is this ‘God’ in that ‘religion’ claiming to have the ‘absolute truth’ and yet abounds with hypocrites, scams, deep divisions, perverts, shallowness, absurd teachings, charlatans, blind followers of men, fanatics, boring rituals, and wishy-washiness?!” The onlooker sees no reason why he or she should ever pick up a Bible and read it. Millions upon millions upon millions of minds all confused about the Bible, and utterly clueless about what it teaches. Millions upon millions upon millions of hearts discouraged because they have used the Bible and not gotten the results they expected. No wonder people say, “Utterly hopeless!”

You would think that, after 2,000 years of having a completed Bible, the professing “church” would have more spiritual sense than it does. Alas, the vast majority of purported “Christian” groups have no idea what they are doing and no idea what they are expected to believe and do. Talk to them and see what they tell you. Read their literature. Listen to their television and radio programs. Browse their websites. So much loyalty was (and is) given to denominations, so much trust was (and is) given to denominations, and so much money was (and is) given to denominations, there was (and is) literally nothing left to give the Lord Jesus Christ! Religion took their hearts, their minds, their pocketbooks, their time, and one day, they will wake up in hell to realize it took their souls, too. Oh, dear friends, may we be motivated to get off of our behinds and teach God’s Word rightly divided to the ignorant masses! It is not “hopeless.”

THE (REALLY) GOOD NEWS

There are many people angry with God. They should not be. There are many people who are upset with the Bible. They should not be. They need to redirect their anger at sinful man. It is not God’s fault that people use His name to commit evil and dastardly deeds. It is not God’s fault that people have misused His precious words. Do not throw away the Bible simply because somebody does not know how to extract its wisdom. Friend, you go find out how to use the Bible and then rejoice in it, ignoring the people who abuse it. You go and find people who use God’s Word God’s way, and fellowship with them, and learn how to reach others with that clear system of Bible study. Avoid the people who abuse it; do not waste your time with them. There is a remnant of believers, and this proves that God’s Word has not failed. The problem is neither God nor His Word. The problem is sinful man!

Please note the parallel in Romans chapter 9: “[6] Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: [7] Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. [8] That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. [9] For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son. [10] And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; [11] (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) [12] It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. [13] As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.”

The above is summarized as follows: The Jews blamed God’s Word for not working. It was a blame-shifting effort to explain what had happened to their nation during the Acts period. Why had Israel fallen? Supposedly, God’s Word was weak, “[it] hath not taken effect” (verse 6). This was not a valid argument. Israel and her program have been set aside, yes, but it was not because God’s Word was ineffectual, unable to do what God intended. The Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul proceeded to give evidence as to what was faulty and what was not (verses 6-13). By the way, for a Jew to say that God’s Word was ineffectual meant he or she was completely ignorant of the writings of Moses. God’s spoken Word had caused the Heaven and the Earth to appear out of nothing. “Let there be…” is a phrase common in the first chapter of Genesis. God’s Word always produces what He wants, but, at the same time, God allows man to refuse to participate. (We will look at this later.)

In Romans chapter 9, verse 7 and onward, Paul argues that God’s Word had always produced a remnant of believers in the nation Israel. We can look at Abraham’s son Isaac, Isaac’s son Jacob, and Jacob’s 12 sons (see the verses quoted above). These are the arguments that the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul puts forth in Romans chapter 9. “God’s word is ineffective” is not what caused Israel’s fall and her program’s temporary pause. It was because only a few believed God’s Word. That faithful remnant, that “Little Flock” (Luke 12:32) proved God’s Word does work mightily in people’s lives. The key is to believe that Word of God. First Thessalonians 2:13: “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” God’s Word will have an “effect” in your life, it will work in your life. Friend, you just have to “believe” it (trust it with your heart). What if the Christian’s, or the church’s, behavior does not match the Bible? Is it the Bible’s fault? (No.) Is it God’s fault? (No.) The blame is on people. The hearer of God’s Word is not a believer of God’s Word. There is no power of God present because there is no faith.

In a manner similar to what Paul described in Romans chapter 9, there is a remnant of believers today. While there are many professing Christians today (over two billion), the number of actual Christians is much less. Many of these “professing Christians” are nothing more than church members. They have joined the church, they have walked aisles, they have partaken of “the sacraments,” they have confessed their sins, they have groveled before pulpits, they have given to charities, and that is all. There was no passing from death to life, no trusting Jesus Christ as personal Saviour. While there is a mental assent, they have no heart belief in that fact that Jesus Christ died for their sins, He was buried to put away those sins, and He was raised again to give them life (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Rather, they “went through the religious motions” and are no better than before. Again, this is no surprise. They have not believed God’s Word. This is why there is no real divine power in their lives. This is why there is no Holy Spirit working in them to produce the life of Jesus Christ.

Dear friends, we must always remember that the God of the Bible has never had most of the world following Him. However, He has always had some of the world following Him. Perhaps the clearest, best example of “the remnant” in Scripture is Noah, “the eighth person” (2 Peter 2:5). Imagine that. Eight people on the whole planet believed God’s Word at the time of the Great Flood! God’s Word certainly did not fail. It could, and did, save eight. The eight souls who wanted to believe. What about the others? The rest of the world’s population at the time—millions upon millions—could not care less about God’s warning. They perished in a watery grave, and woke up in hellfire!

Think about the Prophet Elijah’s ministry. During the reign of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, wicked apostates that they were, Baal worship was declared the official state religion of Israel (the Northern Kingdom). In the midst of this national pagan idolatry, Elijah had a powerful ministry for JEHOVAH God. The very well known account of 1 Kings chapter 18 involves Elijah conducting a test to prove the prophets of Baal as frauds. When they are demonstrated to be liars, their lives are taken in an attempt to right wayward Israel (1 Kings 18:40; Deuteronomy 13:1-11, especially verses 6-11). Jezebel, very upset, threatens to take Elijah’s life for disrupting and ruining her religious system. Elijah, scared (relying on the flesh instead of on God), flees and hides in 1 Kings chapter 19. Elijah tells God, “I, even I only, am left” (verse 10). He repeats it in verse 14, “I, even I only, am left.” God tells Elijah, “Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him” (verse 18). Paul quotes this in Romans 11:4 to defend the “Israel’s-believing-remnant” principle he first mentioned in chapter 9. In your own time, you can read the opening verses of chapter 11 to see Israel’s Little Flock. When you think about it, Israel having “7000” believers in Elijah’s day, that was indeed just a remnant. A nation, Israel, with a population of several million, and only 7000 people believed God’s Word! But, at least those few believed!

The Word of God has certainly not failed. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I know that am saved from sin, death, and hell today. God’s righteousness has been imputed to my account, once and forever. I am sure that Jesus Christ has reserved a spot for me in heaven—either He did enough, or not. On the basis of my works, there is certainly no hope for me, so I am not even going to attempt working to heaven. God’s Word has made a difference in my life in the 20-plus years since I trusted Christ as my personal Saviour. So again, God’s Word has not failed me. I could say the same about countless others who I know. They too are members of the Church the Body of Christ, children of God by faith in Jesus Christ. They too have forgiveness of sins and will play a role one day in God’s restoration of heaven unto Himself. The problem is not that God’s Word has failed. The problem is that the world has failed to apply God’s Word. Indeed, God’s Word did not fail. Rather, people failed to use God’s Word God’s way.

Think about your own testimony. Somehow, beyond belief, the Gospel of the Grace of God reached you, friend. Somehow, despite all the odds, dispensational Bible study reached you. There were faithful Christians somewhere who, many years ago, treasured and loved God’s Word so much that they made sure it reached us today. Go back 400 years. Our King James Bible translators were ever so diligent and faithful in rendering God’s words in modern English, so we could have them and enjoy them today. To those people, it looked “hopeless.” Yet, Christianity survived to reach us today, 400 years ago—nay, 20 centuries after Jesus Christ’s blood was shed on Calvary for our sins.

We read JEHOVAH God telling Israel in Isaiah 55:11: “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” As we noted earlier, God’s Word has all the power that went into the creation of the universe from nothing. As it prospered with “Let there be…” so it will flourish even today. Because of man’s free will, sinners are not always going to be converted. Still, the Bible will convict them and show them their need for salvation from sin.

Colossians 1:5-6 is one example of sinners converted from satanic bondage and slavery to sin: “[5] For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; [6] Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:” Make no mistake, the Gospel of Grace will do its work. We just need to get it out there, friends. (Some faithful saints from the time of the writing of Colossians, all the way up to the 21st century, passed on that Gospel so we could have it today. We need to do the same for future generations!)

Even in his day, 700 B.C., the Prophet Isaiah had a difficult time getting people to listen to and believe God’s Word spoken and written through him. “Who hath believed our report?” (Isaiah 53:1). There was “a very small remnant” of believers in Israel when Isaiah began his ministry (Isaiah 1:9). Centuries later, even after Christ performed many miracles before people, “they believed not on him” (John 12:37-38)—John the Apostle quoted Isaiah 53:1 as fulfilled there. Some years later, the Apostle Paul took the verse and applied it to Israel refusing to listen to God’s Word through him during the Acts period (Romans 10:16). What was the problem? Over and over and over, it was never God’s Word at fault. The problem was the audience did not believe the Word of God spoken to them!

The nation Israel was largely apostate when Paul began his ministry in early Acts. After all, he, as Saul of Tarsus, had come out of that spiritual blindness himself. One of the Lord’s goals for Paul’s ministry was to save Jews from their apostate nation (as he himself had once been saved). It was always forefront in Paul’s mind that he would never be able to convert many or most. He admitted twice that he conducted his ministry in such a way so it would “save some of them [lost Jews]” (Romans 11:14, 1 Corinthians 9:22).

We call to memory the Lord Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:13-14: “[13] Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: [14] Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” This is just a common fact throughout the Scripture, just as true today as it was in Noah’s day, or Isaiah’s day, or Jesus’ day, or Paul’s day. It needs no further comment.

Before God’s apostle of the Gentiles left this planet, he penned in his final epistle: “This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes” (2 Timothy 1:15). These Christians did not leave the Lord. Rather, they left the ministry and message that the Lord had given the Apostle Paul. Friends, before “church history” as we know it began, the Body of Christ (in modern-day Turkey—once a major hotspot for grace doctrine) had already fallen away from God’s spokesman to them! Ephesus (Acts chapter 19), Antioch of Pisidia (Acts chapter 13), Colosse, Lystra and Derbe (Acts chapters 14 and 16), and Galatia (Acts chapters 14 and 18) had once been chief cities and regions in Paul’s ministry in Asia Minor. Now, at the writing of 2 Timothy, his ministry and earthly life drawing to a close, Asia has fallen away. They have abandoned God’s grace, and returned to the Law, works-religion (1 Timothy 1:3-11). Years earlier, Galatia had had problems with legalism. Now, it has spread to all grace assemblies in Turkey. While there are a few faithful Christians still committed to the grace message in Asia Minor, most believers have fallen into the trap of which the Holy Spirit warned in Acts 20:28-35. The “grievous wolves” have entered in, and they have corrupted God’s people with “perverse things.” God’s Word had not failed. Rather, they failed to stay true to the doctrine that the Lord Jesus Christ had spoken to them through the Apostle Paul! Beloved, may we take these examples to heart, that we not abandon the grace doctrines committed to us through the Apostle Paul.

CONCLUSION

Whoever says, upon looking at Christendom, “God’s Word has failed,” he or she is repeating the Jews’ objection that the Apostle Paul faced during the Acts period. If God had indeed set Israel aside temporarily, and He had, if He had indeed paused their program, and He had, there was a problem. What was the problem? Whatever the problem, unbelieving Israel refused to take the blame. Rather, they placed the blame on God’s Word. You can read Romans chapter 9 and see four objections (or questions) that the Jews used to explain why God had momentarily suspended their status and program. They are in verses 6, 14, 19, and 30. The Holy Spirit’s answers through Paul immediately followed the questions.

The very first objection/question was verse 6, which Paul answered with “Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect.” God’s Word had not failed. There was a believing remnant in Israel who had accepted that divine revelation. The only logical conclusion would be that Israel’s program had temporarily paused because there was a lack of faith on her part. All of Israel had not been converted to Jesus Christ. Just a “little flock” (Luke 12:32)—and notice the word “little”—had seen prophecy fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth as their Messiah. No, God’s Word was not the problem. Unbelief—rejecting/doubting the Word of God—was the problem.

Likewise, today, all the confusion and ignorance in “Christian” churches and organizations is not God’s fault. People did not listen to and believe His Words found in the Holy Bible rightly divided. They followed church tradition, they followed philosophy, they followed anything and everything but the Word of God dispensationally-delivered. They largely ignored the Apostle Paul’s epistles, Romans through Philemon. Had they listened to God’s Word to and about them, they would have avoided the spiritual disaster we see all around us today. Instead, they did not learn the lesson from Israel’s history. They too failed to believe God’s Word.

What about the Jewish Roots Movement?

WHAT ABOUT THE “JEWISH ROOTS MOVEMENT?”

by Shawn Brasseaux

“What can you tell me about the ‘Jewish Roots’ Movement? I have several friends who are being greatly influenced by their teachings.”

Friend, thank you for that question. Prior to this, I was unaware of such a movement. Having now researched it, I will outline this system using two simple points. While much could be written about its other tenets, a discussion and thorough refutation of its two core doctrines should sufficiently answer your question. Adherents of this “Jewish Roots” system (also known as the “Hebrew Roots” system) hold to the following two basic beliefs. While this will get lengthy—the culmination of nearly a year’s worth of study and prayer—please know that this Bible study was abbreviated and simplified as much as possible. Beloved, this is our special-edition Bible Q&A article #225!

JEWISH ROOTS POINT #1. CHRISTIANS SHOULD (RE)LEARN THE “JEWISH ORIGIN” OF CHRISTIANITY TO RESTORE DOCTRINAL INTEGRITY.

Jewish Roots proponents believe that the Christian Church today has largely forgotten its origin in the Bible’s “Old Testament” books (Genesis through Malachi). They argue that Christianity is so doctrinally weak and deceived today due to its complete departure from Old Testament Judaism. Jewish Roots people urge us to return to the unadulterated teachings and writings of Moses and the other Old Testament prophets, that we restore our doctrinal purity so that it matches the original “New Testament” church. They contend that the original “New Testament” church was Judaistic in nature and we Christians today should follow Judaism.

Some Jewish Roots supporters have gone so far as to study the Old Testament Scriptures in the original Hebrew language—rather than an English translation—to obtain an alleged “greater understanding” of God’s Word. They do not believe that the English language communicates God’s Word to the extent of the Bible’s original languages. (Sounds to me like someone’s been listening to unbelieving “scholarship!”)

JEWISH ROOTS POINT #2. CHRISTIANS SHOULD USE THE MOSAIC LAW TO EXPERIENCE DAILY RIGHTEOUS LIVING.

Romans chapter 11 is said to teach that we Gentile Christians have been “grafted into Israel.” (See our study linked at the end of this article.) Consequently, we need to follow Israel’s passages as though they were written to us. The Jewish Roots people claim that, in order for us to have victorious lives in Christ, we must keep the commandments of the Torah (Moses’ five books, Genesis through Deuteronomy). In that system, obedience to the Mosaic Law is how Christians overcome daily sins. They insist that we keep God’s laws to receive His blessings and avoid His curses. They maintain that we must walk by faith in the Law of Moses because the Lord Jesus Christ did so in His earthly ministry. Not surprisingly, Jewish Roots adherents are known for observing kosher food laws (abstinence from pork, for example). They also claim to observe the holy days the LORD through Moses commanded Israel to observe in Leviticus chapter 23—feast days, Sabbath days, and so on. They encourage us (the Body of Christ) to join them in keeping these religious holidays also.

JEWISH ROOTS—AN “AWAKENING” PROMPTED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, OR JUST ANOTHER RELIGIOUS SYSTEM FABRICATED BY MAN?

The Jewish Roots Movement is viewed as an “awakening,” supposedly “a move of the Spirit of God to cause people to better understand the Bible.” Consequently, since the mid-1990s, the movement has experienced significant growth. There is no official count because Jewish Roots followers are scattered throughout various churches and ministries. Worldwide, there are perhaps tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of “Jewish Roots” supporters. The movement sounds impressive, but is it worth our support? We aim to answer that question in this Bible study.

Although there is no single leader of the Jewish Roots Movement, an interesting tidbit sheds light on its history. Founded by Herbert W. Armstrong (1892–1986), the now-defunct cult “The Worldwide Church of God” (WCoG) was noted for its observance of Old Testament laws, including the Sabbath day and Israel’s feast days. One “Jewish Roots” author I read openly admitted that his decades-long background in the WCoG was influential in causing him to embrace the “Jewish Roots” paradigm. It is not a surprise, then, that a person from one cult would easily embrace a movement and transform it into a cult. There may in fact be many former WCoG members now coming under the banner of “Jewish Roots” to form their own new denomination.

For the rest of this study, we will look at the two above “Jewish Roots” points and evaluate them according to the Holy Bible rightly divided. The majority of this study will focus on the second point (Law-keeping and Christian living), addressed from several various angles. While this will be some “deep” material at times, it has been prayerfully edited and re-written many times over, that it reads its smoothest and clearest.

REBUTTAL POINT #1A. JUDAISM AND CHRISTIANITY, THOUGH RELATED, ARE OVERWHELMINGLY DISTINCT

Jewish Roots supporters are correct in saying that Christianity and Judaism are closed connected. We Bible-believing dispensationalists have no disagreement there. The JEHOVAH God who introduced Judaism through Moses’ ministry is the same God who founded Christianity through the Apostle Paul’s ministry. However, in the Jewish Roots Movement, too much emphasis and too much authority is placed on the Old Testament Scriptures. As we progress in our analysis of the system, we will see this thoroughly demonstrated.

While the books of Genesis through Malachi are inspired of God (2 Samuel 23:2; cf. 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21), and while God has promised to preserve His words forever (Psalm 12:6-7; Psalm 33:11; Psalm 100:5; Isaiah 29:18; Isaiah 30:8; Isaiah 40:6-8; cf. Matthew 24:35; 1 Peter 1:23-25), these 39 Bible books have nothing to do with us today. They have nothing to do with what God is doing today. We can and should study the Old Testament (cf. Romans 15:4), but we should not expect to find ourselves or God’s plan for us back there. However, Jewish Roots people believe their identity is found in the Law of Moses. They use the Old Testament Scriptures to interpret the New Testament Scriptures. This is actually a reversal of what God the Holy Spirit intended. The 39 books of the Old Testament were given first, before the 27 books of the New Testament were given. We should use the advanced revelation to understand the earlier revelation. It makes no sense to use old information to interpret new information.

Friend, there is extensive testimony in Paul’s epistles, Romans through Philemon, that we (the Church the Body of Christ) were not revealed to the Old Testament prophets. Those prophets of old knew absolutely nothing about our Dispensation of Grace, absolutely nothing about God’s plan to restore the heavenly places to Himself, and absolutely nothing about the agency that He would use in the heavenly places for His glory (the Church the Body of Christ). For Scriptural proof, please see Romans 11:25-29, Romans 16:25-26, 1 Corinthians 2:6-8, 1 Corinthians 15:51-55, Ephesians 1:9-12, Ephesians 3:1-11, Colossians 1:24-27, 1 Thessalonians 4:13–5:9, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-17, 1 Timothy 2:3-7, and Titus 1:1-3. (Unfortunately, we do not have time and space to quote and expound upon all these passages. Please read them at your convenience.) When we go back to try to find ourselves in the Old Testament, we are ignoring the dispensational boundaries God has established in His Holy Word. We are contradicting the principle of progressive revelation and making it regressive revelation. Going back in time actually limits the spiritual light and understanding in God’s Word. The Bible was revealed to mankind over a period of 1,600 years or so. Why stress the earliest books of the Bible when you have more recent Scripture written down?!

Jewish Roots adherents—like all denominations in Christendom—fail to follow the divine principle of Bible study delineated in 2 Timothy 2:15: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly divide the word of truth.” Rather than keeping Paul’s epistles separate from the rest of the Bible, they use the Old Testament to interpret (actually, corrupt and diminish) Pauline theology. God never intended us to mix prophecy and mystery. Yet people do it all the time in Christendom without hesitation. We cannot expect to use what God revealed in “time past” to shed light on what He kept secret in “time past” but has revealed in the “but now.” That which God spoke since the world began (Acts 3:21) can in no way be used to explain that which He kept secret since the world began (Romans 16:25). That is to say, the Old Testament Scriptures were never meant to explain Paul’s epistles. Paul’s books describe what the God of the Bible is doing apart from the Old Testament prophecies, apart from Israel’s prophetic program, apart from her earthly kingdom plan. Paul’s epistles were meant to explain why there is a delay in the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies, why there is a delay in Israel’s prophetic program, and why there is a delay in her earthly kingdom plan.

The Apostle Peter, in his final epistle, mentioned how people “wrested” the Scriptures “unto their own destruction.” These people mixed up the verses that God had separated, and then they made their spiritual lives a complete mess. They had particularly corrupted Paul’s epistles. This is true of all the groups and denominations in Christendom today—and yes, the Jewish Roots Movement is guilty of this. Note 2 Peter 3:15-16: “[15] And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; [16] As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.”

Jewish Roots people claim that we Christians are “spiritual Jews,” alleging that we have been grafted into Israel. (See our study at the end of this article.) This is a gross misrepresentation of Romans chapter 11. Friends, the Bible says there is no Israel before God today in our Dispensation of Grace (verses 11,12,15,25,28)! Since Jewish Roots adherents believe we are “spiritual Jews,” they tell us to behave like Jews. Although their assemblies are primarily made of Gentiles, Jewish Roots participants wear Jewish clothing, employ Hebrew names and phrases, and practice “Davidic dancing.” In fact, they dislike the Greek name “Jesus.” They prefer His Hebrew name “Yeshua,” and they use “YHWH” (the Tetragrammaton translated “JEHOVAH/LORD” in our English Bible). They claim we should use the “pure names of God”—Yeshua, YHWH, et cetera. This is a direct denial that God’s Word and name can be pure even in a translated form. Just what good was the gift of tongues if God’s Word and name were tainted in translation (Acts chapter 2, Acts chapter 22, et cetera)?! How could the Holy Spirit guide these men into such error if translation was as bad as the Jewish Roots people claim?!

Dear friends, like most of the professing church today, Jewish Roots people want to be Israel so they follow Israel’s verses and behave and talk like Israel. The truth is that the Jewish Roots adherents are more obvious about what they believe than other denominational systems in Christendom. Regardless, all these denominations blur distinctions between the Church the Body of Christ and the nation Israel. As we noted earlier, the Jewish Roots doctrine is that we have been grafted into Israel because the Torah made provisions for believing Gentiles to come and join Israel (see Exodus 12:48-49; Esther 8:17). Again, this is a failure to understand the Bible dispensationally. God’s dealings with mankind today are vastly different from His will during the days of Exodus and Esther!

Indeed, God promised blessings to Gentiles on the basis of Israel. Genesis 12:1-3 is one of the most classic cases in point. Matthew 25:31-46 is another example. But, let it be repeated once more, there is no national Israel today in the Dispensation of the Grace of God. Friend, read the entire eleventh chapter of the book of Romans. We do not approach God today by becoming a member of Israel or by coming through Israel. We are made “nigh [near unto God] by the blood of Christ… for through him we both [Jew and Gentile] have access by one Spirit unto the Father” (Ephesians 2:13,18), not by the nation Israel. Why? Again, there is no Israel today through which we can approach God. Jews in national Israel are said to be “enemies for your [Gentiles’] sakes” (Romans 11:28). In God’s mind, national Israel is blinded and cut off. How can we approach God through an agency that He does not associate with today, a nation that He does not recognize today? It makes no sense. That is one of the primary faults of the Jewish Roots Movement—claiming Israel’s verses and promises as true today when they are not valid today.

REBUTTAL POINT #1B. LEARNING HEBREW, THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, IS UNNECESSARY FOR CHRISTIANS.

Some (if not most) Jewish Roots people encourage us to study the Old Testament books in their original Hebrew language so that we can learn deeper truths “obscured” in English Bible translations. This is complete nonsense. It parallels the Roman Catholic doctrine of, “Come to the priest, that he may interpret the Latin Bible so you can know what God’s Word really says! After all, God has made our ecclesiastical leaders the sole interpreters of His Word.” Beloved, our 1611 King James translators, empowered by the Holy Ghost, were thoroughly equipped to translate the original Bible languages for us. If we cannot teach our theology from the 400-year (standard) English Bible, we had better toss out that theology and quick! If we have to re-translate the Holy Bible to make it say what we want to teach, we had better be ready to give an account to God Almighty Himself for usurping the role of the Holy Ghost! He will demand why you thought you knew better than Him!

The Bible-believing view is that the Holy Bible in any language is still God’s pure Word. (To say otherwise is to closely identify with Mormonism, which says that the Bible is God’s Word “as long as it is correctly translated.”) God instituted human languages in Genesis chapter 11 at the Tower of Babel. Does He not know how to translate properly? I would say that He does. God’s Holy Spirit empowered the Apostles to speak a translated Gospel message in Acts chapter 2. Paul’s Hebrew speech was translated into Greek in Acts chapter 22. God wants His Word translated into all the languages of the world, that all nations of the world be reached with His truths (Zechariah 8:20-23; Matthew 28:19; Romans 1:5; Romans 16:26). Do you agree with God concerning the translation of His Word, or have you adopted the absurd manmade position that language limitations limit God Almighty?

While I am not a Hebrew scholar, and I never plan to be, I have been told that Hebrew is a very difficult language to master as a “second language.” It is more challenging than Greek, the language of the New Testament. Even scholars have difficulty when translating Hebrew. To read and translate a Hebrew Bible is no easy task, and Jewish Roots demands all Christians be equipped to do it?! Absurd ad infinitum! Furthermore, unless the person reading the Bible has the Holy Spirit, the Bible might as well as have been written in Egyptian hieroglyphics largely eroded over time. Beloved, language and translation are not the problems. The problem is a spiritual matter. People need God’s Holy Spirit to understand His Word (1 Corinthians 2:11-16)! No doubt the “difficult” and “mysterious” passages in the Bible are “difficult” and “mysterious” in any language. After all, the Bible is discussing spiritual truths that the unsaved human mind will never, ever, ever comprehend anyway… no matter what the language! The Bible truths that are difficult for Christians to understand, require thoughtful verse comparison and critical thinking, not retranslation. It requires hours of daily study, and most people refuse to study the Bible because they find it “boring.” They would rather sing, dance, clap, and jump in “church.” They would rather some preacher or priest read and “interpret” the Bible for them… if so, they had better hope and pray he/she “interpreted” it correctly!

We will now look at the other primary error of the Jewish Roots Movement. This is the bulk of our discussion.

REBUTTAL POINT #2A. THE LAW SYSTEM BELONGED IN JESUS CHRIST’S EARTHLY LIFE BUT NOT IN OUR CHRISTIAN LIVES

“Jewish Roots” zealots view Jesus Christ’s earthly life and ministry as a pattern for their (and our) life and ministry. If Jesus lived by the Mosaic Law, and He did, then we Christians should do it, too, so they say. They enjoy quoting 1 John 2:4-6 to drive home this point: “[4] He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. [5] But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. [6] He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” Or, 1 John 5:3: “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” They quote Jesus’ words found in John 14:15: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

However, there is one glaring problem with their reasoning. They ignore the fact that Jesus Himself said concerning His earthly ministry, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24). He said in John 4:22, “Salvation is of the Jews.” Jesus was not talking to us Gentiles in the 21st century! Jesus’ life under the Law (Galatians 4:4) was for Israel’s benefit, not for ours. He followed the Law because the Law was what God demanded Israel follow in Exodus and Deuteronomy, among other places. That Covenant of Law was never given to Gentiles (Romans 3:19-20). It was given to Israel. What is God’s Word to us? We follow the Apostle Paul as he follows Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1). We do not know Jesus Christ after the flesh, after His earthly ministry: “Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more (2 Corinthians 5:16).

Jewish Roots followers obey the kosher food laws of Judaism (Leviticus chapter 11; Deuteronomy chapter 14). Why are they so fixated on Law-keeping? They are trying to force Christians to quit living wild, worldly lives. Law-keeping is seen as the answer to the carnality so rampant in the professing church today. One Jewish Roots author suggested that we repent, or stop sinning, in order to be saved! (This sounds no different from the average, “evangelical/Protestant” “salvation invitation” of “Repent of your sins and then repeat the sinner’s prayer after me!”) In Jewish Roots, there is also great emphasis on Sabbath-day keeping and observing Judaism’s other religious days (more on this in Rebuttal Point #2G). Like the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Jewish Roots people avoid “pagan” Christmas and Easter. After all, the Old Testament laws forbid following heathen practices. When Paul tells us not to observe holy days (Galatians 4:9-11 and Colossians 2:16-17), the Jewish Roots people suggest that he is actually forbidding us from embracing pagan customs. In other words, they say Paul was not discouraging us from observing Israel’s feasts as the traditional view holds. They say the Apostle just wanted us to avoid the pagan customs that the Law of Moses forbade. (Again, we will later debunk this, their sly defense, in Rebuttal Point #2G.)

Jewish Roots people say we should keep the Law of Moses in order to be justified before God. They run to Romans 2:13: “For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.” Beloved, this is a tremendous distortion of that verse. Paul was not arguing believers needed to keep the Law of Moses to be justified before God. If I say, “Only those who can run and jump a few miles will be able to cross the Grand Canyon,” am I implying that any person can accomplish such a feat? No, I am saying that no one can reach the bare minimum needed to jump across the Grand Canyon. God was not saying our way to salvation was Law-keeping. He was saying that our way to hellfire was Law-breaking. In the context, Paul is discussing soul salvation from sins (chapters 1-5), not daily living of believers (chapters 6-8). Paul was saying in Romans 2:13 that we could not keep the Law; therefore, the Law was not the way to eternal salvation! The Law was the way to eternal damnation! He was arguing that people trying to establish their own righteousness would not be justified before God, because they could not keep the Law. It did not matter who heard the law, but rather people who obeyed the Law of Moses. Israel heard the Law but they did not do the Law. They were sinners, just like the Gentiles they condemned as “sinners.”

Everyone heard the Law but no one had the ability to keep it, thus necessitating Jesus Christ’s coming to usher in a better system (the theme of the book of Hebrews). That Mosaic Law system was finally done away with once God proved that such a system was disadvantageous to the sinner (later discussed in Rebuttal Point #2E). If we are justified by faith in Christ, that is our position. Now, we simply have to walk by faith in that identity so it becomes practice (victorious Christian living). Let us explain the faulty nature of the “Jewish Roots” system and the Mosaic Law system, and how the Grace system is ever so much better.

REBUTTAL POINT #2B. THE LAW SYSTEM DESTROYS THE HOLY SPIRIT’S CURRENT MINISTRY

Interestingly, before the deputy of Achaia, the Jews accused Paul the Apostle as one who “persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law” (Acts 18:13). The Jewish Roots people have a hard time with this verse, but it is possible to worship God contrary to the Law of Moses. Certainly, Paul, the Jewish rabbinical scholar that he was, believed we could worship God without following Moses’ writings. (Horrors!) Paul’s epistles, Romans through Philemon, tell us that we can worship Father God today according to the system of Grace. We do not need the former system of worship (Law) when the current one is so much more advantageous (Grace)!

The “Jewish Roots” Movement is a reversion to a system that God has since ended. Galatians 5:18 settles the matter once and for all: But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. (Jewish Roots people gloss over this verse for obvious reasons.) This verse and its context are talking about Christian living. The Spirit of God never, ever, EVER leads anyone to strive under a performance-based acceptance system in this the Dispensation of Grace. Period. If we have to labor to get God’s blessings, then that it is legalism. Jewish Roots is legalism. If we have to do good works in order to avoid God’s curses, then that is legalism. Jewish Roots is legalism. Legalism is Law-keeping, Jewish Roots is legalism, and it is not what God would have us to do today. God’s grace teaches us how to live. We do not need the Mosaic Law. If someone says we need the Law of Moses to govern our lives, they have automatically denied and pushed aside God’s Spirit and His grace. How serious! (And this “Jewish Roots” system is supposedly being used by “God” to “awaken” people to the truth? What duplicity! What a scam! What a sham! What error!)

Titus 2:11-14 delineates the basis of our Christian living: “[11] For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, [12] Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; [13] Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; [14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” If God’s grace alone can “redeem” us and “purify” us that we may be a “peculiar people zealous of good works,” then what is the purpose of the Mosaic Law for Christians? Friend, that is just it. The Law is not necessary for Christians! It is a Satanic attempt to sidetrack today’s believer!

When the Apostle Paul speaks against the Law of Moses, the Holy Spirit says exactly what He means and He means exactly what He says. God has a new operating system today and it is not the Mosaic Law. It is so easy to understand that Paul writes that we are under grace not law. Paul did not tell us to observe God’s laws rather than “pagan Israel’s laws.” In Galatians 5:18, Paul said we are under no law system at all. Unlike the Jewish Roots people, the Holy Spirit through Paul did not distinguish between pagan laws in Israel and God’s pure laws in Judaism. God is not operating any law system at all. Period. Romans 6:14-15 says: “[14] For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. [15] What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.” (We will look more fully at this in Rebuttal Point #2D.)

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:19, “Quench not the Spirit.” If the Holy Spirit works today apart from the Mosaic Law (and He does, according to Galatians 5:18), and a Christian operates under the demands of the Mosaic Law (as the Jewish Roots Movement encourages), then that Christian is hindering the Holy Spirit from working in his or her life! It is most serious, dear readers, that we not be deceived by this system of Jewish Roots. Avoid it like a plague, friend, avoid it like a plague!

REBUTTAL POINT #2C. THE LAW SYSTEM IS PERFORMING TO RECEIVE GOD’S BLESSINGS AND AVOID HIS CURSES

One of the most damnable beliefs of the “Jewish Roots” Movement is that we must perform to gain and maintain God’s blessings. We have to live right to receive blessings and avoid curses. It is believed that the United States of America is currently under God’s curse today because it has broken the Ten Commandments. In the Jewish Roots Movement, “good works,” “enduring temptation,” and “overcoming” are necessary to receive God’s blessings. Friends, that is straight out of the Mosaic Law system. Defenders of the Jewish Roots Movement contend that just as we have to obey manmade laws, we have to observe Father God’s laws. If we have no problem with obeying all of our nation’s thousands of laws, they say that we should not be so resistant to keeping God’s laws, that we should not call it “legalism” or “salvation by works.” Rubbish! Silliness! Absurdity! Double-talk! Deception!

While it is a clever defense, the above “Jewish Roots rebuttal” is nothing more than “wisdom of words” meant to deceive (1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Romans 16:17-18). How Father God deals with us and how a manmade government deals with us are two incomparable systems. If God dealt with me on the basis of my works, I would not have a chance. The same is true of you. God’s laws are much stricter—to break them is not to pay a fine or go to prison for life (as with a human government), but to go to hell forever! Why does a government develop and pass laws? It does so to keep order in society. Why did God give the Mosaic Law? To show Israel—and all the world—we sons and daughters of Adam could not measure up to God’s glory and righteousness. Again, there is a big difference between manmade laws and God’s laws. Obeying the laws of the land is compulsory. Do it or face a harsh penalty. A Christian is not commanded of God to “do good works or else.” Beloved, we are free to follow God and we are free to reject Him. That is grace! That is not compulsory! In gratitude to Him for what He did for us, we should be so willing to delight in doing what He wants accomplished. If we have that attitude, we do not need to have Him motivate with threats of curses.

In all fairness, all “Christian” circles today claim that we need to follow the Mosaic Law (to varying degrees). The Jewish Roots adherents appear to be most obvious extremists. Should we Christians obey and follow the Mosaic Law to get God’s blessings? Well, let us study the Bible to answer that question. Paul is “the apostle of the Gentiles” (Romans 11:13). What God has to say us is in Paul’s epistles, Romans through Philemon. All of the Bible is for us, but not all of the Bible is to us or about us. In time past, God dealt with Israel using the Mosaic Law. If a Jew wanted to know God’s will, he/she had to go to the Law of Moses (Romans 2:17-20). But again, God sent Moses to Israel, not to us Gentiles. Whom did God send to us? The Bible says it was Paul. What does God tell us about keeping the Mosaic Law today? What is God’s will for us? Let us see what else God has to say to us through Paul.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). “And ye are complete in him [Christ Jesus]” (Colossians 2:10a). “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). God has made us “accepted in the beloved” (Ephesians 1:6). We have complete and total fellowship with Father God, the same fellowship His Son Jesus Christ has with Him (1 Corinthians 1:9). And, it is because of God’s faithfulness not our faithfulness! That is why we can never lose it. God is always faithful, friend, which is more than what we can say about ourselves!

Everything we need, we already received it in Christ. There is not one blessing, not one blessing, NOT ONE BLESSING, we have not already been given upfront in our Lord Jesus Christ. Father God has nothing left to give us! Why do we have to strive to keep the Law and get God’s blessings when we already received God’s blessings in Christ without us keeping the Law? “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous” (Romans 5:19). We were made righteous by Christ’s obedience at Calvary (cf. Philippians 2:8). It was Jesus Christ’s obedience that saved us and blessed us, and it is Jesus Christ’s obedience that keeps us saved and keeps us blessed. Dear friends, unless we have a denominational system to advance, it is quite easy to understand. God does not give us blessings just to revoke them. He never gave us those blessings due to our obedience anyway!

REBUTTAL POINT #2D. THE LAW SYSTEM IS “THE MINISTRATION OF DEATH” AND “THE MINISTRATION OF CONDEMNATION”

Jewish Roots adherents ignore 2 Corinthians chapter 3 for obvious reasons. We do not serve in the oldness of the letter but in the newness of spirit (the Spirit of God, verse 17). This is clearly a contrast between the Law of Moses in “time past” and the ministry of the Holy Spirit today in the “but now.” A system of works does not give life but rather it kills. Dear friend, what the Holy Spirit does (grace) is what gives life!

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians chapter 3: “[6] Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. [7] But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: [8] How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? [9] For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.”

Romans 6:14-15 says: “[14] For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. [15] What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.” Why are we under grace and not law? Because the Bible says the Law gives sin dominion over us! God took away the Law system that was disadvantageous to us and He replaced it with something that benefited us—grace, everything He could do for us through Calvary’s finished crosswork because we are unable to do anything for Him. Law does not belong in our Christian lives. In 1 Corinthians 15:56, we read “the strength of sin is the law.” Do you want sin to be strong in your life? Again, the Bible says to place yourself under the Law system. Romans 3:20 says “by the law is the knowledge of sin.” The Law does nothing but condemn you, whether you are saved or you are lost.

By the way, it does not matter whether it is the Law of Moses, your laws, your church’s laws, your parents’ laws, your spouse’s laws, et cetera, all “law systems” operate the same! No matter what type of performance-based acceptance system it is, you as a sinner are doomed to fail. Again, that is why God replaced that weak and beggarly system with the grace system described in Paul’s epistles! The “ministration of death” and the “ministration of condemnation” is the antithesis—the opposite of—grace. If you want righteousness (godliness) to reign in your life, stay with grace. If you want sin and guilt to run your life, and ruin your life, follow the Law system. It really, really is that simple, friends. Make your choice… and be ready to live with the consequences, good or bad!

One of the most important portions of the book of Romans is its seventh chapter. Jewish Roots supporters also gloss over these Bible passages because of their implications. In it, Paul speaks very negatively of the Law of Moses. The Apostle begins the chapter by affirming we are “dead to the law by the body of Christ” (verse 4). Note verse 5: “For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.” In our old identity, in Adam, when we were sinners, before we came to faith in Jesus Christ, “the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.” The Law is what gave sin strength in our lives as lost people. The Law pointed out our failures. It did nothing to help us reform for it could do nothing to help us correct our sins. It simply accentuated, or highlighted, everything we did wrong. Verse 6 says, “But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.”

And continuing on in the chapter, Romans 7: “[7] What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. [8] But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. [9] For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. [10] And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. [11] For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. [12] Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. [13] Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.”

Could the Bible be any plainer? We are not under the demands of the Mosaic Law. This is not a matter of opinion. Look and how the Law of Moses “helped” Paul in the above situation. It “helped” him to become a miserable wretch, so defeated and despondent. He concluded the chapter, “[24] O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? [25] I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” Paul’s Christian life was in ruins; the Mosaic Law had killed his victorious Christian life. Read all of chapter 7 of Romans and you can see that clearly. Commandment-keeping did not help the Apostle Paul in his Christian life. Are we not silly to think the Law will make our Christian life successful and enjoyable? Are we any less sinners than Paul was?

We know that Paul is talking about the Mosaic Law in Romans chapter 7 because he mentions coveting, the last of the 10 Commandments. It has nothing to do with Paul speaking against Christians observing pagan religious rules. It has everything to do with Paul speaking against Christians observing the Law of Moses. The answer to experiencing Christian living is not the Law of Moses but the principle of “the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:2). All of Romans chapter 8 is the answer to the misery of chapter 7. The Spirit of God will work in us when we believe His words to us, Romans through Philemon. We are not performing to receive God’s blessings (Jewish Roots and legalism). Father God is working in and through us because He has already given us all of His blessings. One of these spiritual blessings is victory over sin on a daily basis. This is accomplished by Jesus Christ’s finish crosswork, not by our commandment keeping.

REBUTTAL POINT #2E. THE LAW SYSTEM IS NOT FOR SAINTS BUT FOR SINNERS

Let us now read what Paul wrote in 1 Timothy chapter 1: “[6] From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; [7] Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. [8] But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; [9] Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, [10] For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; [11] According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.”

Like those false teachers in Ephesus whom the Holy Spirit through Paul condemned, the Jewish Roots adherents and teachers do not know what they are saying or what they are really causing people to do. They are binding people using a religious system that ended in complete failure. Like all denominations, they are using God’s Word—the Mosaic Law—to destroy the lives of Christians. The Law of Moses never saved Israel, it never helped Israel, and it never gave Israel a right standing before God. That is why God will make with Israel a New Covenant, to give them the spiritual blessings they could never gain under the Old Covenant of Law (see Hebrews chapters 8-10).

As 1 Timothy chapter 1 said above, all that the Law could do was condemn people as “lawless, disobedient, ungodly, sinners, unholy, profane, murderers of fathers and mothers, manslayers, whoremongers, them that defile themselves with mankind [homosexuals], menstealers, liars, perjured persons,” et cetera. How do we use the Law of Moses “lawfully?” Galatians 3:24 says of Israel, “The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” The only purpose of the Law is to show us that we need a Saviour—not a bunch of rules and regulations—to deal with our sin problem. It teaches Israel that they need a Saviour rather than another performance-based acceptance system. To use the Law system for righteous people is to use the Law wrongfully. Christians are righteous in Christ, so what does it mean if a system force the Law on the Christian? (The Law of Moses is being used wrongfully!)

Jewish Roots adherents tell us to use the Law of Moses as a means for daily Christian living, yet the Bible tells us repeatedly that the Law is not made for righteous man. The Law of Moses is for an ungodly man. Are Christians “godly” or are they “ungodly?” Are they “righteous” or “unrighteous?” If they are godly and righteous, and they are in Christ (Romans 3:22; 1 Corinthians 1:30; et cetera), then they have no need for the Law. Again, the Law shows us that we need Christ; the Law is not meant to make us acceptable before God, either positionally or practically. The Law is there to show us we do not merit God’s favor with our performance. Law-keeping does not stress God’s performance on our behalf but rather our performance to try and please Him.

Once more, Jewish Roots adherents demand that people obey the Mosaic Law in the Dispensation of Grace. In 1 Timothy 1:6, the Holy Spirit calls this “vain jangling,” empty chatter, worthless talk, just a bunch of noise. There is no substance and no soundness in what Jewish Roots people preach and teach… or any other legalistic preacher or teacher, for that matter. It is all the sadder when we remember that such people are deceived because they have not used the Bible properly and they are deceiving others because they do not use the Bible properly themselves. They damn souls using the Bible, the very text that should have been able to clear up the confusion and bring salvation. How awful! I would hate to be in these people’s shoes when they stand before God one day! They will have to confess to Him what they did using His Word all the while claiming “Jesus Christ” was being honored in their deeds!

Frankly, the Jewish Roots Movement advocates (childish) legalism. A child has to be led by the hand, instructed regarding every little detail—what to wear, what to eat, where to go, what to do, how to do it, et cetera. We read from the Bible’s famous New Covenant passage, Jeremiah chapter 31: “[31] Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: [32] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD. God’s own summary of the Mosaic Law is that it is to “take [Israel] by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.”

As an adult would lead a child, so JEHOVAH God led Israel out of Egypt. By calling us back to Mosaic-Law observance, Jewish Roots people are making us return to an immature spiritual lifestyle. As the book of Galatians (4:1-10) and the book of Ephesians (4:11-16) say, we are full-grown adult sons of God. We are to be mature because a completed, written Word of God to lead us, and we should know enough about what it says, in order to make our own decisions in life. What does 2 Timothy 3:16-17 say? “[16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17] That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” The word “perfect” does not mean sinless, it means mature. God does not want spiritual children for Christians; He wants spiritual adults! Go read Hebrews 5:10-14, God’s rebuke of ignorant and immature Israel.

Galatians chapter 3 says in verse 10, “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.” Whenever we do not continue in everythingyes, EVERYTHING—the Law demands, we are cursed. James 2:10 amplifies it: “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” Friend, do you still want to place yourself under that system? The law works wrath, Romans 4:15 says. Does God’s wrath belong in the Christian’s life? Then, it only stands to reason, neither does the Law! And neither does Jewish Roots!

We read again in verses 23-25 of Galatians chapter 3: “[23] But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. [24] Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. [25] But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.” “The law was our schoolmaster to bring us [Israel] unto Christ.” Now that we have found Jesus Christ, there is no further purpose of the Mosaic Law. The Law has taught us (Jew and Gentile) that we all need Jesus Christ. The Mosaic Law is now irrelevant, replaced by something far better. The grace system!

Here is yet another major inconsistency within the Jewish Roots Movement. While they constantly claim they are observing JEHOVAH’S feasts according to the Law of Moses, a close inspection reveals that they are not doing what they allege. They are no more honest with Moses’ writings than they are with Paul’s epistles. Moses said that Israel’s three main feasts were to be observed in Jerusalem at the Temple (Deuteronomy 16:16). The fact is that most Jewish Roots adherents do not live in the land of Israel, or anywhere near Jerusalem. They do not go to Jerusalem three times a year for Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. And yet Moses said Israel’s men were to do just that! If the Jewish Roots people are “spiritual Jews,” should they not be doing what Moses told Jews today? Duplicity could not be more obvious, friends! Israel’s Temple has been destroyed since A.D. 70, so no one—not even Jews in Jerusalem—can properly observe the feasts of Judaism.

REBUTTAL POINT #2F. THE LAW SYSTEM IS “WEAK AND BEGGARLY,” NOW REPLACED BY THE GRACE SYSTEM

“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace” (Romans 6:14). We are not bound to keep the Mosaic Law in this the Dispensation of Grace. At this point, the following objection will undoubtedly be raised, “If the Bible says we are free from the Law of Moses, does that mean we now have license to go out and sin all we want?” The next verse tells us: “God forbid [May God protest it and never let it happen!].” “What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid” (Romans 6:15). To say that we can sin all we want because we are under grace is a complete failure to fully grasp what the passage (and grace) teaches (more on this later). To say that the Law helps control sin, is to miss Romans 6:14 entirely. The way you have sin rule your life is to place yourself under the Law. Again, we need to remind ourselves that the Law works wrath (Romans 4:15)!

Notice Galatians 4:9-11: “[9] But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? [10] Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. [11] I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.” And Galatians 5:1,13: “[1] Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage…. [13] For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”

The Christians in Galatia were being pummeled with false teaching. After Paul left Galatia, some false teaching went into the local assemblies there and taught them that they had to keep the Law of Moses in order to be saved (cf. Acts 15:1-5). Paul’s response was simple (we quoted it in the previous paragraph). He instructed these deceived believers: “Galatia, do not return to ‘bondage’/the Mosaic Law, either for salvation or for Christian good works.” The Apostle urged them not to be “bewitched”/tricked into working for their salvation, or using the Law system in their Christian lives to enhance their salvation.

See also Galatians 3:1-5: “[1] O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? [2] This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? [3] Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? [4] Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. [5] He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?” The Bible says “Law-keeping” today is “foolish!” Thus, Jewish Roots is equally “foolish!”

Again, we know Galatians is not merely a forbiddance against pagan practices and false religion, but the pure Law of Moses with its physical circumcision (Galatians 2:21; Galatians 3:17-25; Galatians 4:4; Galatians 5:2-3; Galatians 5:13-14). “But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter [the Law]” (Romans 7:6). This is spoken against the Mosaic Law, not pagan practices as the Jewish Roots people claim.

Romans 10:1-4 testifies: “[1] Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. [2] For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. [3] For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. [4] For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.”

Why did Paul want Israel to be saved in the above passage? It was because the unbelieving Jews were—like so many billions of people today—using the Mosaic Law to try to please God. They were attempting to prove their own righteousness by performing in religion. These lost Jews were encouraging Paul’s converts in Galatia to do the same. None of them had learned the truth of Romans 3:19-20, that God gave the Law to condemn all Jews and all Gentiles as sinners: “[19] Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. [20] Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” The Law only pointed out their failures, our failures, as sons and daughters of Adam. Simple! SIMPLE!

Galatians chapter 3 affirms once more: “[19] Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. [20] Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. [21] Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. [22] But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. [23] But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. [24] Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. [25] But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.”

Why was the Law added? Was it to highlight Israel’s goodness? Was it to show Israel just how obedient they really were to Almighty God? On the contrary, the book of Galatians says that the Law “was added because of transgressions.” Could the Bible be any clearer, beloved? The Mosaic Law was not given to give anyone a right standing before God. Period. Romans 5:20 sustains this argument: “Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” That sin would appear for what it really is, God gave the Law of Moses. As Galatians 3:24 says above that the Law was Israel’s “schoolmaster” to “bring [Israel] unto Christ.” But, oh, grace is so much better… where sin abounded, grace could (and did) cover it! Praise God for Romans 5:20!!!!!!!!!

Why are we not under the Law of Moses today? God has done away with Israel’s works-religion system (Judaism). It failed because the Jews were sinners. We are all sinners, Jew and Gentile (Romans 3:9). The Jews could not live up to the Mosaic Law (Acts 15:10), and we certainly cannot live up to those standards today either. If Israel wanted to be blessed of God and be on God’s “good side,” they had to obey Him (keep the Law). Otherwise, they would receive God’s curse. Those were the conditions of the Old Covenant/Mosaic Law (see Leviticus chapter 26 and Deuteronomy chapter 28). The Law, in God’s eyes, is “weak and beggarly” (Galatians 4:9). It is “weak through [our] flesh” (Romans 8:3). We cannot keep the Law, and God does not expect us to because He has already used the Law to prove us as sinners (Romans 3:19-20). So, if not by the Law of Moses, how are our Christian lives governed today?

As we saw earlier, Titus 2:11-12 explains: “[11] For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, [12] Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;” And verse 14, “[Jesus Christ] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”

If you have trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, God’s grace has saved you from sin. Now, you are a saint of the Most High God. God’s grace and your new identity in Christ give you the capacity to say, “My former, lost lifestyle is not me anymore. My life needs to reflect the life of a saint, not a sinner.” As 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” God’s grace teaches us to put away sin as Jesus Christ put away sin when He died and was buried (Hebrews 9:26). Why do we need the Law of Moses to teach us how to live, when God’s grace teaches us how to live? Why do we need the Law of Moses (which cannot produce righteousness), when we have God’s grace (which can and does produce righteousness)? See, dear friends, Satan is causing us to leave what is valuable and embrace something worthless! To go back to the Law is to ignore Grace! Period.

As we study and believe God’s Word dispensationally—understanding that God’s Word to us is Paul’s epistles, Romans through Philemon—God the Holy Spirit will use that sound doctrine to work in us, and He will fulfill the demands of the Law, and God performing in us will bring about a change in our behavior. As 1 Thessalonians 2:13 says, “…the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.” And, again, Galatians 5:18 says, “But if ye be led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law.” The basis of our Christian life is not us fulfilling the demands of the Mosaic Law. It is allowing the indwelling Holy Spirit to accomplish His will in and through us. God Himself will work in us to fulfill the righteousness that the Law demanded Israel produce on her own. (Not because God thought Israel could do it, but to prove to Israel she could not do it!)

The way to sabotage your Christian life is to place yourself under Israel’s performance-based acceptance system like Galatia was doing—performing to get God’s blessings and to avoid His curses. Paul struggled with keeping the Law as a Christian in Romans chapter 7, and he concluded the chapter in defeat. Again, I would encourage you to read Romans 8:1-15, which describes the Christian allowing the indwelling Holy Spirit to fulfill the demands of the Law in him/her, instead of the Christian forced to fulfill the demands of the Law in his/her own strength (like with Israel). There is nothing about keeping the Law in chapter 8 of Romans, and yet, that chapter talks all about how to have victorious living in Jesus Christ! You cannot just be “Scriptural.” You must also be “dispensational.” Yes, Law-keeping is in the Bible, and it was practiced at one time, but it is not true today. That is what right division is all about. Return to 1 Timothy chapter 1 and see how using the Law of Moses—the Scriptures—was detrimental/harmful to Christians in Ephesus.

Some Jewish Roots people claim, “Keeping the Torah brings blessings—not salvation.” Our Apostle Paul never said such a thing, either. We are already blessed in Christ, forever and ever. We lack nothing in Christ. We do not need to work to be saved or to be blessed. God already gave us everything in Christ! God has already “accepted you in the beloved [Christ Jesus],” regardless of your performance (Ephesians 1:6). He has already “blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3), and we did not work to get them—Christ worked for them. Our performance is not the issue—Christ’s performance in us is the issue! Notice Galatians 2:19-20: “[19] For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. [20] I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” The Christian life is not us living for Christ, but Christ living in us! “Christ liveth in me.” (The Law system was Israel’s performance to live for God, but the Grace system is God working in and through us to fulfill the Law.)

Notice again how God’s grace transforms our lives (without the Law). Romans 12:1-2 explains: “[1] I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” How do we get the “renewed mind?” Study God’s Word dispensationally, and, by faith in that sound doctrine, we let the Holy Spirit use that sound doctrine to work in us for God’s glory (see Ephesians 4:17-32)!

Romans chapter 5, verses 20 and 21: “[20] Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: [21] That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.” Once more, the law system makes offences abound. The Law only exposes failure. It does not grant righteousness or bestow blessings. We can study Israel’s 1500-year-long stint operating under the Law of Moses. Look at what a disaster it turned out to be. Read Genesis through Malachi. God let them see just how wretched they were all along but they were in denial of it! As you can see, grace is advantageous to sinners. Sin reigned as a king to produce functional death in our lives. Our behavior as lost people got us nowhere before God. Now, grace can reign in our Christian lives to produce eternal life in our daily lives. We can now display “the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:11). Now, not by us keeping the Law but by Jesus Christ operating in and through us according to grace!

REBUTTAL POINT #2G. WAS PAUL MERELY AGAINST PAGAN PRACTICES, OR WAS HE ALSO AGAINST THE PURE LAW OF MOSES?

Jewish Roots defenders have a very clever way of getting around Paul’s “anti-Law” passages. They argue that the Apostle Paul was not against the Law of Moses, the traditional interpretation of Paul’s epistles, but rather the Apostle was actually opposed to Christians observing the pagan laws that Israel used to pollute the pure Law of Moses. We want to answer this now.

Let us turn to Acts chapter 15, noting verses 1 and 5: “[1] And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. [5] But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.” Is there any doubt as to the context, good friends? It is the Law of Moses, and physical circumcision according to Moses. There is no pagan religion here. This is the pure, unadulterated Law of Moses. Members of the Church at Jerusalem (elders and apostles) were filled with the Holy Spirit, so they were observing the pure Law of Moses. Jesus (like James and 1 John) told the Little Flock to keep the Law of Moses. Jesus said that if the members of the Messianic Church did not keep the commandments of the Mosaic Law and teach others to do the same, they would be “least in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:17-20; cf. Matthew 28:19-20). Even as late as Acts 21:20, there were believing Jews in Israel’s Little Flock who were “all zealous of the law.”

The famous Jerusalem Conference of A.D. 50 settled the matter once and for all as to whether or not Gentiles in Paul’s ministry should keep the Law of Moses as Israel’s Little Flock were doing. Peter in verse 10 of Acts chapter 15 says that the legalists in Jerusalem were “tempting God” by forcing Paul’s Gentile converts to observe the demands of the Law of Moses. That does not sound like a good thing, does it? Yet, Jewish Roots proponents are “tempting” God even today, forcing Paul’s Gentile converts back under the Law of Moses! (Satan never quits, beloved, even 2,000 years later!) And, once more, is there any question about pagan practices being observed? No, it is talking about the Law of Moses.

Again, when Peter said the other believing Jews were “tempting the Lord” in putting a “yoke on the disciples’ neck,” we know he was referring to the Law of Moses. Remember, verses 1 and 5 already set the context! It was not a matter of observing pagan practices and believing pagan ideas, but whether or not Paul’s converts should keep the Law of Moses, the pure Law of Moses. What was the conclusion? Paul’s Gentiles converts were not under the Law of Moses. Period. Read Acts 15:19-35. Paul made reference to this Jerusalem Conference in Galatians chapter 2, illustrating to the Galatians they were wrong in observing the Mosaic Law. The Galatians were under Paul’s ministry, the Mosaic Law did not belong in Paul’s ministry, and the Mosaic Law did not belong in the Galatians’ lives!

In stark contrast to the Jewish Roots doctrine, Colossians 2:16-17 says that we have no obligation to observe any feasts of Israel. We are not under the Sabbath day rule, the holydays, new moons, et cetera. Colossians 2:16-17 could not be clearer: “[16] Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: [17] Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”

As noted earlier, the Jewish Roots supporter will immediately rebut by saying that Paul was not against observing the “Feasts of JEHOVAH” (Leviticus 23), but rather was just telling the Colossians not to participate in pagan feast days and holidays in false religions. This is a very slick defense, but again it does not work. Are pagan feasts prophetic? Are they “a shadow of things to come?” Of course not! However, those Feasts of JEHOVAH were prophetic, for they prophesied various historical events in Israel’s history and future (Christ’s death at Passover, His burial for Unleavened Bread, His resurrection at Firstfruits, the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day Pentecost, re-gathering of Israel for Trumpets, Christ’s Second Coming to make atonement for Israel’s sins, and the establishment of His earthly kingdom with Tabernacles). Did pagans observe the “Feasts of JEHOVAH” noted in Leviticus chapter 23? No. Then, Paul in Colossians chapter 2 was indeed referring to the Feasts of JEHOVAH as delineated in Moses’ writings. Paul said we are not obligated to participate in them. Those feasts involved God’s plans for Israel—and let us say it again, until you see it in your sleep—we are not Israel!

Did pagans observe the Sabbath Days? Of course not! Who was given the Sabbath Day commandment? Israel (Exodus 20:8-11)! Yet, Paul mentioned the Sabbath Days in Colossians 2:16 by name and he forbade such activities amongst the Gentiles in his ministry. Obviously, Paul is not referring to pagans and pagan activities. He is referring to the Mosaic Law feast days and calendar! Colosse was to avoid all types of religion—pagan and Moses! Religion is the antithesis of grace. Works is the enemy of grace. Get it! Get it! Get it!

REBUTTAL POINT #2H. COLOSSIANS 2:6-7—THE “DEATH BLOW” OF THE “JEWISH ROOTS” MOVEMENT

After all this, we still have a little more to say before we conclude. Colossians 2:6-7 is the final nail on the coffin lid of the Jewish Roots Movement. While Jewish Roots proponents say they are not teaching “salvation by works,” they in fact are. Let consider Colossians 2:6-7: “[6] As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: [7] Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” How did we “receive Christ Jesus Christ the Lord?” Was it by works (law) or by faith (grace)? As Paul asked in Galatians 3:2-3, “Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?”

We received Jesus Christ by faith, Colossians 2:5 says. Our salvation, our Christian life, started on the basis of Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork. It had nothing to do with our performance. We are saved by faith in Jesus Christ without works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Colossians 2:6 says that our Christian life will operate on a daily basis in the same manner as it started. How is? Jesus Christ’s finished crosswork, His victory over sin in resurrection life, not our legalistic performance to put away sin in our own strength! (If the Jewish Roots people are correct in saying our Christian lives operate on the basis of works/Law, then Colossians 2:6 forces them to say that they believe we are initially saved by works!)

CONCLUSION

While this Bible study was in the early stages of development, the following brief correspondence was sent to me via email by one of our online friends: “As one who used to keep the Sabbath and the Holy Days, Passover, Unleavened Bread etc, dietary laws etc etc I can tell you the Jewish Roots movement is a CULT! Thankful for the Grace of God and my salvation through faith in Christ alone. PTL.”

I would strongly agree with the sender above that the Jewish Roots Movement is cultic. Why? As you saw beyond the shadow of a doubt, that movement is designed to draw away Christians from their identity in Christ, from sound Bible doctrine that is applicable to them, and have them focus on something else. Christians in religion are so busy concentrating on their performance in religion, they very little time, if any, to think about what Jesus Christ did for them at Calvary’s cross! They are so busy worrying about what the “church” wants done that they do not know what God wants done!

In light of the above comments and verses, it would be best to avoid the Jewish Roots Movement. It is a dangerous system that promotes Bible ignorance and deception. In my own opinion, it is one of the most convoluted “Christian” religious systems I have studied. While we cannot read the hearts of its adherents and proponents, we can read and understand that their teaching is overwhelmingly false. True, they quote some verses properly, but they persistently attack the New Testament Scriptures and especially Paul’s epistles. They confuse the Body of Christ with the nation Israel, they mix law and grace, and so on. We sincerely doubt the legitimacy and godliness of the Jewish Roots Movement.

There are pros and cons to the way of approaching Scripture from the Jewish Roots mindset. Yes, by examining the issue it further accentuates how the God of the Bible transitioned from Judaism to Christianity. Jewish Roots is an attempt to curb or eliminate the worldliness in the lives of professing Christians today. There are some good intentions. However, the reality is that there is very little truth in the Jewish Roots Movement. It is not worth pursuing beyond its two foundational principles.

Those who are not skilled in the word of righteousness have a hard time differentiating and rightly dividing the word of truth. The Jewish Roots system, despite good intentions (?), just further compounds the confusion that already abounds in the minds of the “worldly” Christians it condemns. Through this research, we have come to understand that the “Jewish Roots” Movement has done (and does) more harm than good in the minds of the people it has reached. Again, it confuses the Body of Christ with the nation Israel. It confuses God’s program for the earth with God’s program for the heaven. It confuses law and grace. In no way does the Jewish Roots Movement glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. It ignores His heavenly ministry through the Apostle Paul. For that reason, Jewish Roots Movement is not of the God of the Bible. Jewish Roots is worth neither our time nor our trust.

What is Acts 9/28 Hybrid Theology?

WHAT IS THE “ACTS 9/28 HYBRID SYSTEM” OF THEOLOGY? IS IT SOUND BIBLE HERMENEUTICS, OR THE TRADITIONS OF MEN WITH A “GRACE FACE?”

by Shawn Brasseaux

In recent months, especially within the last several weeks, I have received numerous emails involving a certain type of so-called “grace teaching.” According to these contacts, the proponents of this system do indeed promote Paul’s special ministry. Yet, they attach certain odd doctrines to the Pauline dispensational paradigm. Examples of these “strange and confusing” doctrines were provided. This teaching has become rampant on social media (particularly Facebook and YouTube). For simplicity’s sake, I call it the “Acts 9/28 hybrid system.” This is the term I will use throughout this study to describe the system.

Exactly what is this system? Should we embrace it, or should we avoid it entirely? As always, we do not take anyone’s word for it. We should always look at the Scriptures before we blindly accept any theological position, even if it claims to be “grace” teaching. It does not matter what any grace preacher says, or any grace teacher says—that includes me especially! Beloved, if the King James Bible rightly divided does not support it, forget it, no matter who teaches it!

How do God’s foreknowledge and our free will work together?

HOW DO GODS FOREKNOWLEDGE AND OUR FREE WILL WORK TOGETHER?

by Shawn Brasseaux

“If God knew that the Amorites would not repent after 400 years [Genesis 15:16], and He knew that they would crucify Jesus Christ [Acts 2:23], and He ‘knew’ all the future misery, woes, etc., etc., why do it? If I know that something is going to end in failure, I do not continue in it… how about you? If God always ‘knew,’ then what ‘is’ free will? Why does God (the Angel of the Lord) say to Abraham on Mt. Moriah, ‘…now I KNOW that thou fearest God…?’”

Thank you for those questions. From the human perspective, these issues are difficult to fathom. We have to look at them from God’s perspective. In the end, these events really did not end in “failure” as you assert. Granted, God knew how those events would turn out, and yet, He still used those events to accomplish His will. When considered in light of the overall scheme of things, these events were not so awful, and they were not failures. Despite giving man free will, and letting man do just about anything he wanted, God still accomplished what He wanted—that is the amazing part! That is the wisdom of God outsmarting Satan’s “wisdom!” As 1 Corinthians 3:19 says, “He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.”

1. THE 400 YEARS AND THE AMORITES

Your first question is a reference to Genesis 15:13-16: “[13] And he [that is, the Lord GOD] said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; [14] And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. [15] And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. [16] But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.”

Remember, when God spoke to Abram/Abraham in the above verses, the nation Israel had not even been born yet. It was over a decade before Isaac’s birth, and many decades before the births of Jacob and his 12 sons (the fathers of the 12 tribes of Israel). God gave the nation Israel a 400-year-long opportunity to grow (multiply) down in Egypt, while He let the Amorites reach their “sin limit” up in the land of Canaan. Israel started out with Jacob and about 70 other people (by the time Israel went into Egypt; Exodus 1:5), but Israel was some two million strong when she left Egypt (400 years later).

By allowing that 400-year period: (1) God proved, to the Israelites and the Amorites, and other nations, He was justified in evicting the Amorites (400 additional years of their wickedness); and (2) He gave Israel four centuries to grow so they could be greater in number to take over the land of the Amorites. That is why God put up with the Amorites for so long. They had not reached their sin limit (“the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full;” Genesis 15:16), and Israel had not reached her population explosion yet.

2. JESUS CHRIST AND HIS FOREKNOWLEDGE OF CALVARY

The best example of God’s foreknowledge and man’s free will operating together is how Israel responded to Jesus Christ when He offered Himself as King/Messiah.

“Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:” (Acts 2:23). No question about it—God foreknew Jesus Christ’s rejection, betrayal, and crucifixion. Before creation, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit had already agreed that God the Son Jesus Christ would die for man’s sins. On the other hand, all three Persons foreknew of man’s rebellion, how Israel would conspire with Rome to kill Jesus Christ (Psalm 2:1ff.; cf. Acts 4:23-28). Note Acts 4:27-28: “[27] For a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, [28] For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.” God revealed to the Old Testament prophets the information that was already determined in eternity past. “But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled” (Acts 3:18). The Old Testament prophets wrote about a suffering Messiah, centuries before Calvary (Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53 are two of the clearest examples).

Luke 24:44-47 amplifies this: “[44] And he [Jesus Christ] said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. [45] Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, [46] And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: [47] And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”

So, there is God’s foreknowledge and man’s free will operating together to bring about Calvary’s crosswork. Man wanted to rid himself of Jesus Christ and thus he conspired to murder Jesus Christ. But then, after Calvary, and especially through the writings of the Apostle Paul (Romans through Philemon), God revealed the benefits of Calvary (see 1 Corinthians 2:6-14), how it was the means whereby man’s sin debt could be paid. God did not force Jesus Christ on those who rejected Him (free will), and yet, He used the results of man’s free will—the rejected Messiah’s blood—to pay for our sins. That is the wisdom of God. He took all of that information into account, and actually outsmarted Satan. (Satan thought Christ’s death would hinder God’s program and plan for creation, but God had another design in mind!—see 1 Corinthians 2:6-8).

The Old Testament prophets also talked about the healing and teaching ministry of Jesus Christ (Isaiah 35:4-6; Isaiah 53:4; Isaiah 61:1-2). Jesus Christ had to come to earth to fulfill those verses by performing miracles, and teaching the doctrine that those miracles communicated. Had Jesus Christ not come, He would not have fulfilled the verses that needed to be fulfilled in order to validate God’s Word. Those hundreds of verses needed to be fulfilled, and they were fulfilled at Christ’s First Coming/Advent.

Ultimately, Jesus Christ had to die. There was no other way to pay for Israel’s sins, and there was no other way to pay for our sins. Jesus Christ had to die, and God simply used the wickedness of man to bring it to pass (see Psalm 2). This is evident in New Testament passages such as Hebrews 10:4-14 (quoting Psalm 40:6-8):

“[4] For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. [5] Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: [6] In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. [7] Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. [8] Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; [9] Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. [10] By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

The only way that man’s sin debt could be paid is if God Himself would die (only He was sinless). God’s righteousness had been offended, and only God’s righteousness could be offered to compensate (make up) for that sin debt. That is why God became a man: He needed blood to offer and make atonement for the sins of man. Man wanted to kill righteous Jesus Christ, and so God used man’s ill intentions to bring about His will after all. Now, Jesus’ shed blood is the means whereby God will one day reconcile all of heaven and earth to Himself (Colossians 1:20)–today, Satan has corrupted heaven and earth (Job 15:15; 2 Corinthians 4:3-4; Galatians 1:4; Ephesians 6:12).

The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 3:23-28, how God in His foreknowledge gave up Jesus Christ to go Calvary’s cross to shed His sinless blood to pay for our sins: “[23] For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; [24] Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: [25] Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; [26] To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. [27] Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. [28] Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”

When we come by faith alone in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as sufficient payment for our sins, we can receive the righteousness of God Himself (2 Corinthians 5:21). We can be accepted of God, have a home in heaven, play a role in God’s restoration of creation to Himself, and many other benefits. God saw these, the end results of Calvary, and that is why He let it fall out like that. See, in the overall scheme of things, neither the Amorites extended stay nor Calvary’s crosswork were failures.

3. HOW THE BIBLE DEFINES “FREE WILL”

In the beginning, Adam and Eve were fully blessed of God. Sin, suffering, and death were unknown. God’s only commandment was Genesis 2:16-17: “[16] And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: [17] But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” God in His grace had given them many provisions—innumerable species of trees and plants from which to eat. They could “freely eat” of every tree, save the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This is free will. God did not force Adam and Eve to do anything. He set boundaries in Eden and let them decide what they wanted to do. They could either stay within those boundaries or cross them.

When Satan attacked mankind, he singled out the woman. After craftily asking Eve if God really said not to eat of every tree, Satan observed Eve depart even further from the truth. Genesis 3:2-5 says: “[2] And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: [3] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. [4] And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: [5] For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

Notice above that Eve neglected the abundance God gave her and Adam. She omitted “freely” from “freely eat,” ignoring the free will God gave her. Made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-28), she was misled to believe that she could have a better position (“gods”). Once Adam ate, they lost that perfect identity, and all its provisions. They exercised their free will and chose wrong. God certainly did not cause them to do right (otherwise they would not have failed). He certainly did not cause them to do wrong (God does not cause anyone to sin!). It was their choice, and they chose to ignore God’s will. God did not force them to do anything.

Luke 7:29-30 is another good passage that describes free will: “[29] And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. [30] But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.” According to the Holy Bible, again, God’s will can be rejected and the Pharisees and lawyers did reject it (this is free will). They did not want to be water baptized, they did not want to repent, they did not want to confess their sins like Moses instructed Israel in Leviticus 26:40-41 when under God’s fifth course of chastisement, and they did not want to be a kingdom of priests (Exodus 19:5-6), so God did not force them. If they wanted to die in their sins and go to hell, God valued freedom to the extent that He let them make their choice. They did not want to submit to God’s righteousness—they were content with their self-righteousness in religion (Romans 10:1-3).

What Jesus said to the Jews in John 5:39-40 is very enlightening: “[39] Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. [40] And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.” Did God choose these people not to have eternal life? Not at all. Contrary to the Calvinists’ claim that say that God chooses some people for heaven and others for hell, these Jews did not want Jesus Christ. They did not want salvation from their sins. They refused to have Jesus Christ. We see this amplified in His words in Matthew 23:37: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! They did not want Him to gather them, so He left them alone in their spiritual ignorance and left them on their hell-bound course that they preferred!

One more clear passage about free will should suffice. We read in 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12, a description of the horrors of Daniel’s 70th week: “[10] And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. [11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: [12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

Again, the Bible says these people did not want God’s love, they did not want anything to do with Him, they wanted to stay lost and on their way to everlasting hellfire, so He gave them over to the lie of the devil (the context is the Antichrist, future events, the seven-year Tribulation). Again, the God of the Bible loves freedom, and if we do not agree with Him, we can disagree with Him (there will be eternal consequences either way).

4. WHY THE ANGEL OF THE LORD SAID HE “KNEW” ABRAHAM LOVED GOD

Regarding your question about Genesis 22:12, “…now I know that thou fearest God…,” The Oxford American Dictionary gives the following primary definition of the word “know:” “to be aware of through observation, inquiry, or information.” The word “know” in this verse is being used in the sense of understanding something through watching it. The angel of the LORD saw what Abraham did (he was about to offer Isaac), and it was through firsthand watching/observance that God was aware. God foreknew it, but it grabbed His attention when it actually came to pass, and He watched it.
